mark poulson
I bought some red plastic worms in the '50s from Thrifty Drugs, that I used for trout. I don't remember who made them, but I found some of them melted to my old tackle box a few years ago.
JSC
Nick Creme gets the credit for being the first ... I am all most sure there were others before like the ones Mark mentioned .. but the first to really be in business with them was Creme. The first one I had was in around 1956 .. bought them in Troy, AL from "Shorty" Renfroe .. he had them hidden and since I was home on leave from the Air Force he let me have one ... Dixie Red Worm ... 3 hooker with a small prop spinner ... My 10 pounder came on this rig .. I cut off the mono "lead" part and replaced it with a wire shaft for the blade and beads and added a #4 split shot to the wire shaft as well.... These were made with a "Cooked" in the mold methord ... I think Cremes was a cooked and poured into the mold ... all of these early ones were in "Open" molds ... Delongs and Sportsman ("Catch Em Quick") were full round I am not sure how Delongs were made but Sportsman were cooked in the mold ... the hinged mold was open and raw plastic added then it was run thru a heat tunnel and at a point the the 2 halves were snapped together. within 5 or 6 years a large part of them were full round and were pressure poured. A little trivia. Thanx for getting the "Old Gray Cells" turning this early in the AM JSC
longhorn
I've read on a couple sites that Nick Creme poured the first plastic worm in his kitchen in 1949.
clemmy
There were of course rubber lures since just before the turn of the century..Not sure that they would be "soft"
