Holy Expoding Pyrex Bat_Man

Recommended Posts

OK, I just had a nearly religious experience....

The weather here was in the low 40's.

I had been dumpin mettalic green pumpkin stikbates as ordered for a client for the last 2 hours. Dude wanted 800 GP stix, Go Figure. I guess it is a confidence color here, and he is in Indiana, it prob works there too. I would mention his name but his contract denies me the privelege. ANYWAY, I was in the middle of dumpin stikbaitz and I dexided I would open the door.... I did open the door and the pyrex cup I had been melting GPChrome in burst into windshiled type fragments all over my head. About ? cup of the pyrex dipper was left. The rest grenaded into my stupid carcass... You fellas do me a favor and when you're micro-waving plastisols, wear a flak jacket and some good shades. My old lady almost dropped a roll of dimes on the floor. Anyway, this is a reminder to be safe all the time and not let yer guard down. Please laugh at me in this thread......LoL

Glad you're ok. :D

Was the pyrex cup empty or full? Or was there a chip in the glass? How hot was the pyrex?

At first I thought you had set it down on a cold table.(I turn several molds over on the table to set the pyrex on).

This is going to make me feel like a boobytrap defuser every time I open the door.

Has this happened to any of the other people using micros?

Thats some scarey stuff.

I usually set mine down on the burner of the stove(turned off) reason being my wife at one time was using a pyrex bowl for some cooking and set it down on the cold counter and kaboom it blew up when she turned her back.

I was using my laser thermometer and the surface temp was 350. I pulled the plastic out of the microwave and set it on some RTV molds as I usually do. The plastic was smoking a little too much so I popped the door open and before I turned around I heard it blast off. I'm sure the temp dropped in the kitchen at least 20 degrees. I only got a couple pieces in my arm as I had a flannel shirt on and the sleeves rolled up. The cup was about ? full wwhen it bombed. I guess this is a reminder to me that I should have paid attention on the job site and attended every "Safety Meeting". LoL

Ok  now I understand.

You open the door to the outside; dropped the ambient temprature in the room and kaboom.

After I read your first post I went to my woodworking shop and got out my face shield and apron. I think I'll still wear them for a while yet. :|

Was it actual pyrex, or pseudo-pyrex? What size cup? Should not be possible with the real stuff...lots of lab experience with it, have done LOTS of stupid things with it. Have to say that would be about a 9.9 on my Weird Sh*t O-Meter. Have had the plastic bubble up and out (moisture, salt, etc). Have also poured with cracked/chipped pyrex, no problems.

Glad it wasn't any worse.

I forgot to mention but Dave reminded me. The cups that exploded on me was not true pyrex.... It was an off brand, and I went out and bought the real stuff soon after... That was almost a year ago and I have cooked alot of plastic since then with no problems.....

I dont know about "wierd" but it was definatley a 9.9 on my "SCARY SH**" Meter... hahaha

It was real Pyrex. 2 cup size. About 3 months old. I bought 4 of em. Room temp was well...Room temp. I opened the door (Forunately my back was turned) and the thing popped. It wasn't very loud, it just went. "Only a flesh wound" is a phrase I am thankul for. The Weird and Scary $h*t meter did hit it's peak. The worst part is I had to remix the damn color and toss the plastic. I think that it must have been the air cooling it messing with the temper in the glass due to the fact that the bottom part of the cup that had the plastic in it was still intact. Pretty bizarre. Maybe it was the IR thermometer's laser...LOL.Good thing I had a couple beers in me at the time or I would have jumped thru the ceiling. Oh well the worms worked good today, caught 5 cookie cutter Bass on a Carolina rig in some nasty chocolate water from the float tube. Can't whine about that.

Have a great weekend everyone! (And don't blow up pyrex)

I've been getting really bored lately and doing lots of graphics on my other (Linux) computer when I take breaks from working. If anyone wants me to make them an avatar or anything, let me know and give me a general idea of what you want. Free...

I have seen some air pockets in the hot plastic inside my pyrex from time to time...esp when running remelt into fresh liquid plastic. Some of these kind of superheat...have actually had one burning in the 'wave. Salt seems to make this worse as well. Sometimes the remelt will sort of float on the liquid and give smoe motion. Have also had my pyrex jump around in the 'wave on occasion. Just a thought.

Weirdest thing I have seen plastic do happened with a hot pot full of 502 (and the reason I will never use 502 again). Plastic got too hot, scorched, burned, and started faoming/pouring out over the top of the pot like fireworks snakes. Not cool.

I was using that damned 3G plastic as it was all I had left. As usual I agitated the container a bit (Shook it until it was foamy..LoL).After scraping the "small" amount of hardener that had settled to the bottom. The only thing I had added previous to heating was a small lump of LC silver pearl . I added colorant and salt after heating ( I posted the recipe in the sticky on the main page). I pointed the thermometer at the plastic and had a temp of about 345F just before ignition occured. The way I figure it, what happened was that since the cup was only half full, the heat dissipating through the empty (Upper) part of the cup was heating the glass to a ridiculous temperature, and when the waft of cold air came in the room it cooled the top of the cup sufficiently to cool it enough to cause it to violently shatter. The lower portion of the cup was intact, that being the part that had the still heated plastic in it. I think the temperature variance in the two parts of the glass caused it to "lose it's temper" and shatter above the line of the liquid due to it's rapid contraction from cooling too fast. I am not an expert on glass, but it is a liquid as far as physics are concerned, and the quick temperature change probably caused it to "splash" or shatter. What I can't figure out is why exactly it didn't implode if it was contracting on itself? I intend to ask my physics professor if my surmise is correct or close next week. Mister Flippin Wizard I ain't...Flippin Lizard, we can handle that....

For now, I am gonna switch to Calhoun Plastic as i ordered a fiver today. That should fix half the problem. I had that 3G garbage burn and foam over like a damned black volcano in one of my production pots, now I need to order a new liner for it. Talk about smoke snakes, I think they even smell better...

Big Z,

You mentioned that you had a few cold ones in you at the time. This may have been the problem for more than the obvious reason..lol

Did you have your beverage in a coozie? If not, you may have had some "cold" condensate on your hand from the can when you touched the glass. This would cause the shattering. I am very carefull about drying my hands when drinking the holy water and pouring at the same time....

Just a thought.....

I don't think I was actually drinkin' and pourin' at the same time, but I had 2 or 3 beers before the incident.Wet Reckless Kitchen Door Opening...GUILTY! I guess I should get a breathalyzer to go with the IR thermometer, then I would be completely gadgeted up. I think I was drinking Full Sail Ale at the time.... Is it just me or does that sound really good right now... The Ones, they are calling from the cold case... To the Dodge with me!!! (A red streak of taillights is left behind the Ram as it roars toward the B??R ST?R?!)

Maybe I will be pouring again, better get out the flak jacket.....
