Keeping Plastic Hot?

Recommended Posts

I'm hand pouring little 1 1/4 inch minnow type baits, then adding 3-d eye's. I double dip to keep the eye's on. Here is my problem, #1 I know that I need a way to keep my plastic at the right temp first,(the plasic in the molds need to cool a little) srinkage helps the look, before I remove, the plastic I'm using is soft drop-shot plastic. I see in the video's there is some type of hot plate or fry pan right? I don't have a infer-red gun I guess I could use a candy thermometer, but, #2 at what temp do i need to keep the activated plastic at?As you all are aware I have had as many failures with keeping the 3-d eye's in place still cannot get that licked after a fish bite them a few times the eye will actually roll over up side down under the double dipping (hate that when it happens).#3 The line of plastic double dipping leaves, is not as clean looking as I would like I guess this is unavoidable? I have finally come up with a product that fits a niche, I think maybe I can market on a very limited basis.Just a few last hurdles to over come. Any help would be appreciated!

I posted a pic of the griddle I use in the post. It is a griddle with high sides set at 400 deg. This is as high as it will go but it is not high enough. If you keep moving it will work for say 30 to 40 baits before it is to thick. If you are getting a thick film of plastic the temp is to low. Try it at about 340 deg and it will give you a thin line at the transition. The eyes are another story they look good till the plastic breaks down the glue that holds them on and then they move, turn over or both. The cheap eyes are not compatable with the plastic. I hear pvc eyes stay in place but have not tried them. I have painted some eyes on with the lure craft paint but really like the way the 3d look.

Get an infrared gun it will help you out more than you know. Harbor Freight for around 30.00. Money well spent. Want to see your idea when you are ready. Frank

I use the holographic dome eye's the Staton's advertise on this site.I use them one my Drop Shot flies I tie...they are so realistic I just hoped to incorporate them into this soft plastic...OK it's a hybrid and I use a little lead head 90 degree hook application with craft hair...all I can tell you is it works! I think I may have it figured out. Super glue the eye's to the lead head then double dip will post the results when I feel the are good enough...you guys blow me away with all the life like swim baits, creature baits and so on...I just hope I at some point will reach the HIGH QUALITY of products that are displayed here. Ok if you must know you guys are so good it really is intimidating!

Don't be intimidated; just remember that at one time we all were where you are now. I've been doing this for over 25 years and there are some guys here that have been at it a lot longer than that.

I still see some things on here that make me say" why didn't I think of that?"

If you have questions try the search feature and after that if you still don't understand simply ask and someone will help I'm sure.

By the way all my eyes come from Lisa and Ed as well.
