Kiwi
Hi guys I'm just starting out making in-line spinners and wondered whether the small wire forming tools (little blue bender, tack-l-tool etc..) are worth while having? Are they a useful tool to have? How small are the spinners you can make with them? I'm fishing for trout so only make little spinners, size 0 or 1 blades. I just use round nose pliers at the moment for forming the eyes, but I like any gadgets that make life easier. Are the wire forming pliers that jewellers use any good as well for forming loops? Last question - Who do you guys find are good suppliers for blades and clevises etc. I have checked out jannsnetcraft and staminas websites but have never dealt with either of them before. Any suggestions for who's good to deal with? Thanks in advance Kiwi
stumpy
Kiwi............I've shopped both Jann's and Stamina for blades and such. Both are excellent IMO. Janns just updated their website for easier shopping. I don't know who would do better on an international order. Jann's delievery always seems a few days faster than Stamina for me. I have used lot's of different wire forming tools to make in-line spinners for everything from trout to muskie. The only difference I find is in the speed and quality of the loops. Last winter I started making bottom bouncer forms and I bought the Hagens wire former. I'm still low on the learning curve with the Hagen's. Overkill and expensive for sure but capable of doing a lot more if I desire.
topher
Want overkill, the wire former from Worth Co. is $700. It does an excellent job, but man.... .051 wrapped eyes in about 5 seconds, little tweak afterwards, and perfect... I haven't tried Hagen's but I will be getting that one soon. The worth one is my buddy's, and it costs too much to fix if it breaks, so I can't use it. Blades, check out ebay. I don't know if the place ships overseas, but I by a lot of blades from Ibaro Ranch. That is their user name, they bought out a tackle co.'s inv. of 270000 blades in all sizes, so you can get them cheap. Other wise, I think that Hagen's has the best prices. Just type in Hagen's in your search bar, they have an online catalog in Adobe, so you can browse with pricing. Chris
Glaucus
Worth make a great little hand held wire former for making twisted eye loops for inline spinners. It works with wire up to 0.028" thick, and is only $10.
Pop
On a previous post someone was saying the Boggs wire former is very good at a resonable price. Barlow has two different Boggs products. What do you knowledgable guys think about the Boggs. Pop
wisconeye
I have used the Hagens for about a year but still struggled with .051 wire and decided to try something a bit different for some of my inlines. I use the Hagens to bend the eye, but have been clipping a piece of coil spring and sliding it up over the two .051 wires and bending one up and cutting it off. It is really fast and I really am happy with the performance, especially with the end for the hook. Here is a picture of seven I just put together from leftover stuff for bodies. Wire bender
Kiwi I also use the small hand held unit made by Worth and it works well for me when I'm making inline lures. Phil
