ewyrick1215
I am new to making my own baits, but starting making jigs a couple weeks ago and have started painting crankbaits. I am wanting to start making spinnerbaits as well, but am a little confused on the sizes of parts to use in making them. I want to make 3/8 and 1/2oz baits. What size blades, cleveses, and beads will work best for the desired baits? It's a little overwhelming to see size 1, 2, 3, 4 cleveses and size 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 blade sizes. Thanks for the help, I've already learned so much from all the great minds on this site.
smalljaw
Welcome to wire baits!! The size clevis you want to use is a #3, they'll work for both size baits and will be good for wire diameters up to .041, blade sizes can be tricky because there is a difference from one manufacturer to the next but they are pretty close. For willow blades on a 3/8oz bait the main or top blade is usually a #4 or #4.5 and the bottom or secondary blade is usually a #3, #3.5, or a #4 it all depends on what size the main blade is, a rule of thumb for blade sizing is the bottom blade should be at least a half size smaller but a lot of people like it to be a whole size smaller, for the 1/2oz baits just use a size larger blade than what you use on the 3/8oz. Those are just guidlines to get you started because there are a ton of variables such as the size of the wire form in general or does the frame have a long blade arm or short arm, or if you are using a fine wire diameter or a large diameter, but for the most part you can strt with the sizes I gave you and once you make a few you'll see how they work in the water and then you can start tweaking wire and frame sizes as well as blade sizes, good luck. Musky Glenn
Great question, on page 23 of the "Lure Parts on line" catalogue they give a good chart showing spinnerbait component size compatibility. That is also a great place to order parts. Musky Glenn
