smalljaw
I have a question for all you guys, can you mix fine glitter with the Devcon before applying? If so, how does it work? The reason I'm asking is I can't seem to find a powder with very fine glitter but I have found fine glitter that you mix in top coat or epoxy but I know from using a few different brands of epoxy that the D2T is a little different in the consistancy and I really don't want to thin it out because the way it is is perfect one coat coverage with little to no running. I hope I don't have to do a blind trial as I won't have any use for the glitter if it doesn't work so any help would greatly be appreciated, thanks. RayburnGuy
I mix glitter in with epoxy whenever I want glitter on a bait. The only difference is I use Etex to do this because it has a much longer working time than D2T and it gives me plenty of time to push the glitter around with a brush if there are any places it's thicker than I want it. And if your wanting a one coat application then it probably won't work as the glitter leaves a rough surface when applied this way. That's because all the glitter doesn't lay down perfectly flat. When I apply glitter this way I always apply a second layer of top coat. My preference for this coat is a dip in DN. If your wanting to stick with one application of D2T as a top coat you might try mixing your glitter in a clear medium and spraying it over your finished paint job with your airbrush and then applying the D2T as you normally would. cadman
Smalljaw, I have tried putting really fine glitter in Devcon. In my opinion it is a P.I.T.A. Because you do not get even coverage and you get more glitter in one spot than the other. Also putting it in Devcon makes it a little stiffer to work with. Which makes it worse as if Devcon doesn't already have a short working time. But that is the same problem with powder paint glitters as well, they all don't cover evenly. I have heard that spray on glitter works the best and gives the best even coat. I have not tried this yet as I don't get a lot of requests for glittered jigs. These are just some of my findings. Tony Maxwell
Smalljaw, I've been adding fine glitter to D2T for many years. No problems with consistant coverage. Just mix well from the get go. You will have to do a clear final coat because the glitter does finish out a little rough. I usually thin both coats a little and have no concerns. If you apply 3D eyes do them after the glitter coat. Good luck.
pirkfan
I discovered something kind of wierd a couple of years ago when messing around with glitter (craft store variety, not the glitter used in soft plastics). I could spray a jig or slab spoon with a clear rattle can spray, then drop the lure or jig in a zip lock bag with the glitter in it and shake...and of course the glitter stuck to the wet lure. If you then gently massaged the lure and glitter through the sides of the bag, it flattened the glitter onto the surface of the lure in a pretty smooth coat. Kind of a neat effect, a relatively smooth surface, the glitter stayed attached (almost like scales), and no topcoat necessary, just let the clear coating dry and use the lure. WidowMaker
The only thing ive used much glitter on is the Do-It Slip Jig (collared worm weight) and im using Devcon 2 Ton Epoxy and the large flake glitter like found in the W/M craft department. I tried to mix this large size glitter into the Devcon and then brushing it on but this technique did not work well as the glitter immediately sunk to the bottom of my epoxy. What i now do is apply one thin coat of epoxy to the weight and sprinkle the glitter over it and let it set for a minute or two. The glitter flakes that arent laying flush ill then tap them down onto the surface with my index finger. Even doing it this way leaves a semi-rough surface requiring at least two additional coats of epoxy. I have mixed it in the D2T but the best way was to put on the D2T and then sprinkle it over the wet coating to get it like you want it. I use a small salt shaker. THEN make sure you put it on a bait turner to dry. The turning let's the glitter which is heaver than the glue sink into the glue and leave the surface smooth.
