Terry Anderson
I own a furniture refinishing shop and respirators are a must in all departments. That said...I am not real sure what the CFM's are above my pouring station, but for kicks and giggles (not funny by the way) I installed a dacron filter over the intake to see exactly what was being expelled out of my shop and not inhaled into my lungs...IT SHOCKED ME BEYOND WORDS!! I have stage 1 Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) and was not about to encourage it to reach stage 2 just to pour plastics. I wear an "overkill" respirator and you cannot even smell the plastisol in my shop after we have poured!! DO NOT TAKE CHANCES WITH THIS STUFF!! I will take a pic of this makeshift filter and post it here...trust me, when you see the gunk on this medium you will NEVER pour without a respirator or proper ventilation. Skimpy
I'm planning on getting a respirator. Is this one a good one to get? http://www.lowes.com...ator%26page%3D1 Edited March 17, 2011 by Skimpy
rixon529
I'm planning on getting a respirator. Is this one a good one to get? http://www.lowes.com...ator%26page%3D1 Product Description From the Manufacturer 3M Half Facepiece Paint Spray/Pesticide Respirator Assembly R6211, Medium. This assembly consists of : 1 each 3M Half Facepiece 6200 , 1 pair of 3M Organic Vapor Cartridge 6001, 2 pair of 3M Particulate Filter 5P71, P95 and 1 pair of 3M Filter Retainer 501. It should work fine for you, but the OV/AG (organic vapor / acid gas) replacement cartridges are recommended for it. Although it costs more, consider the benefit of a full face respirator - it wil also protect your eyes from fumes and vapors. Hope this helps. The replacement cartridges lowes sells and that came with it are OV/p95. Are these the replacement cartridges that work best for plastic fumes? rixon529
Thanks, I bought it today. The replacement cartridges lowes sells and that came with it are OV/p95. Are these the replacement cartridges that work best for plastic fumes? The MSDS for LureCraft plastisol, Section V - Reactivity Data, states: "Hazardous Decomposition or Byproducts: Hydrogen chloride, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and small amounts of benzene and aliphatic hydrocarbons." I looked up the chemicals named, and 3M recommends an AG (acid gas) respirator for the hydrogen chloride component. For the other constituents of the composition of plastisol 3M recommendations are for OV (organic vapor) with a P95 filter. All that being said, I believe the AG/OV/P95 cartridge/filter would be best suited to meet the need for plastic cooking. In a brief internet check, I found the OV cartridges to be about the same price as the OV/AG give or take about $1 per pair. Better protection for about the same money.
