deadlystreamer
OK you guy, I need help. I tie a pretty good and proven trout streamer. I sell a lot of them and have for many years. Now I'm asking for something special and there has to be one of you that can make this happen. Here's the deal.. I need a fly that will get nice big trout when it's windy, pouring buckets of driving rain, foggy, cold, and did I say wind that takes your fly everywhere except where your casting it? I just explained my week of trout fishing in Northern Michigan that got cut short by two days because I'm not what I thought I was. This is the very first time I've been forced to cave in and come home with my tail between my legs and my creel empty. Any suggestions? Shotgun, dynamite, club, great big treble hook and a Cain pole? Get this; I come home to find orders on my answering machine and more rain and wind. Today, Sun we had winds of 50 MPH and 48 degrees. Red-g8r has complained of 80 and rain. Come-on Jerry, come here and I'll take you fishing that will drive you crazy. Heck to top it off we lost our power for 5 hours today. I think you probably won't be able to come up with a fly to work in these conditions, so tomorrow is Monday and a start of a new week. Let's hope it goes a little better then last week. Mylures
You know what they all say. The worst day of fishing is still better than the best day at work. From what it sounds like you should have waited a weekend and stayed home and tied some flies. It sure was a windy devil and alot of hard rain. I came up with a new crank over the weekend. No pictures yet as I haven't tried it out yet. If it works half as good as it looks I shouldn't come home skunked. Have a happy and better next week. redg8r
Oww, Didnt realise you had such a bad trip.... Dont think any fly could help you in those conditions, but a warm fire, some Baileys & cofee & a shiny vise would help on days like those. We have this thing down here called "hurricane season", where it basically rains everyday for 3 months straight & every living creature decides to take refuge in your house. You gotta love good ole Mother Nature, but sometimes she'll kick ya in the balls. I see alot of you up north are gettin alot of storms right now, stay safe you all. deadlystreamer
Baileys & cofee Wonderful idea.. Ok g8r, I'll live with my storms. 3 months and all Mother natures creatures trying to move in the house with you, And I complain : Hey Ken, You said "The worst day of fishing is still better than the best day at work." Agree, but work is against my religion. I gave up that bad habbit 4 years ago. After being a teamster for 30 years, I thought fishing would be more fun, and it is..when the weather is nice.LOL Looking forward to seeing your new crank. Good luck with it. It's good to be back in the saddle here at TU. Now have to get that web site changen thing going. (my old english teacher would be sooo proud of me. )
BuggermanBob
I don't fly fish yet, I use a spinning rod. Won't your weighted flies on a spinning rod do? Or something a little heavier, like a bucktail jig? I bet you make some great ones after seeing your flies. If the 'weight forward', standard method of making jigs and weighted flies dosen't give you the horizontal action that you are looking for, try mid or rear weighting to offset the boyency of the bucktail. You can add more weight that normal and it will look more lifelike in the water.
deadlystreamer
Hello there BuggermanBob, Oh man you don't want to use my Streamers on a fly rod, You'll knock your self silly. They are made for the ultralight spinning rod using 4 or 6lb line. The way the body is molded to the hook and the shape of the body gives it all the action needed. They come in sizes 1/4oz, 1/8th oz and 3/32 oz. The 1/8th and 3/32nd oz come in what I call a regular or a special. The special is a longer shank hook. It was made primarily for the short strikers. Hope you decide to try them. Thanks for showing an interest.
Maze
Hey George, a bit unrelated but thought you'd like to know that last night on the Black River in Hawkinsville, NY the Deadly Streamers were just that ! The Small and Large Mouth Bass went crazy for them. Had a few nice Trout following and even missed a couple of hook sets. Got a small Northern too ! Can't wait to go again !!! The Bass liked them trolled behind my canoe ! Imagine that ! Maze
deadlystreamer
Hi Ray. Happy to hear you had good luck with them. With all the fishing variations for the fly, I'm not surprised they liked chasing your canoe. Thanks for the up date.
Gr8flyz
Deadlystreamer, I don't think your problem was the flies, I doubt if anyone could have cast flies in those conditions. I really enjoy fly fishing, and will attempt to cast under a lot of adverse conditions, but I know there will always be those times when it just don't work! I have rigged flies for spinning gear a few times, or I just go with lures when the weather don't cooperate. If it gets too bad I just go home & tie flies, so you're not alone when it comes to giving in because of the weather.
deadlystreamer
ahhh My own support team. Guess we all have that problem now and then. Here's a new one. My electric motor just hums now, or rattles. It quit. Any suggestions? It's an old one. Minn Kota is the brand.. Do I have to dig up my yard to find a couple coffee cans to buy a new one? Just thought I'd ask. Hope I don't get fired for putting this in the wrong thread.
Gr8flyz
Sorry, but you might want to start digging, my experience with electric motors of any type has been when it just hums, it's time for a new one! It may be that the brushes are just burnt. It might be repairable, but may not be worth it, since you said it was old.
