Pre-rigged Hook Molds

Recommended Posts

hi everybody. I've learned a ton from this site. I just dove in and got five gallons of plastic and started pouring this weekend, and everything went really well. I made a bunch of "10 stick baits from pop molds and I was pretty pleased with how they turned out, and the biggest reason was the do's and don'ts I picked up from this forum.

I'm a striped bass fisherman in the northeast and I've had great luck with the larger soft plastics like sluggo and hogy. I use the double hooked pre-rigged ones whenever I can and that sort of a lure is what I'd ultimately like to be making in some volume. I haven't seen many post with embedded tandem hooks. Does it have to be a two piece mold? Am thinking of making a hook slot like the hogies as it would be easier to mold and also allows repeated use of the hooks as the bodies get chewed. would I have any patent issues with a hookslot because hogy has already done it? Thanks for any opinions/info.

as far as i know there is no mold out there that is made for pouring pre-rigged baits. but i poured some a while back. i dont remember if i posted on here or not. i think i did. ill attached the pics so you can see what i did. basically i just suspended the hooks in the mold and poured around it. the hooks are not the right size for the bait, i was just playing with the idea. also i will attach the swimmerbait i did. its a spinner bait body with a trailer hook and its suspended in the mold

If you're just interested in a single hook such as a (weighted or unweighted) 60 degree jig hook poured into a bait, find a block of wood the same height as your open top mold. Get a pair of locking pliers (hemostatts or vice grips work), and lock them on the eye of the hook. Lay the pliers on the block of wood so that the hook is properly positioned in the mold and pour away. The advantage of this over a dowel under the point of the hook is that there is nothing in the way when pouring except the tip of the pliers

lure craft sells silicone molds ( 1 pc. open pour ) for pre rigged baits.

I pre make my harness w/ 2 or 3 hooks on mono,,

put the harness in the mold then pour.

The LC deal is basically a wooden mold frame. Frame "mothers" the outside of the mold (usually RTV), and has attachment points (pins or screws that stick up from the wood are the ones I have seen) for the excess length of harness to sort of hang in the cavities. They used to offer it on a lot of their big molds, and straight worm molds for making "farm pond" worms. Should be pretty easy to knock together some pine pieces and make something that will work for your mold and needs.
