BLT
They have UV coating for fly tying for the thread wraps and to make "heads", anyone ever try it to coat their jigs? Wonder how it would hold up. I hope to do a test soon on this. We have UV coating at work, and I would just have to buy a bulb for at home and have at it. If you ever get a catalog of magazine that has that really glossy coating on the cover, that is what I have access to in clear and matte/satin. From what I am told, will not yellow. Only bad thing, if you think E-Tex stinks...........
smalljaw
CSI has a powder UV that you applie just like clear powder paint, I never used it because I'm not 100% sold on the idea that fish can see the UV spectrum.
BLT
This is "UV" coating, but it's called that only because a UV light cures it. This doesn't have anything to do with fish seeing it, just a different coating method......maybe
cadman
Bob, If you are going to do some testing, I would like to see your results. Even if we can not obtain the stuff you use. I'm kind of on the same fence as Smalljaw. I am not a big believer of the UV thing. I know sun and water , hot an cold are brutal on a cars paint or other things that come in contact with the elements. However, I don't buy into all of the data about it being needed for jigs and crankbaits. I lose more jigs than I worry about sun bleaching the paint or it yellowing a topcot. However I do believe that over time the sun will do just that. I guess my point is that if I have to spend $3 more per ounce of powder paint or per ounce of top coat, it is not worth it to me. Just my honest feedback. However I am very curious how your testing will go. Please keep us informed.

Soon as we run another job that requires the coating on the cover of the Catalog, I was told I could have a few Oz. to take home. Not sure when the next job is scheduled, but hope it's in the next 2 weeks. This is just something I want to try to replace the D2T coating, and still have the "depth" look to it. Not sure what all "testing" I want to do. Leave out in the sun for a day or so....drop testing when cured, maybe even a saltwater soaking. I use a polyurethane from Minwax for coating my threads on my jigs and teasers I tie on hooks. (2 coats) Did some testing with that also to make sure it held up in the water. Very cheap way to do it, and never had any issues with it. Can even put sparkles on it while drying. Always looking for an edge, as long as it doesn't give me bad results. Wish Corp. America would do it that way lol.....they just look for CHEAP!

Sometimes you stumble on something that is used for one application and it works better on another. I too always am looking for things that are better and less costly. The polyurethane Minwax you use is that water based? How is the longevity in the can when not used for any length of time?

Other people had used it and told me about it, no tackle creds go to me.

The polyurethane Minwax you use is that water based? How is the longevity in the can when not used for any length of time? I picked up a jar of the UV clear powder coat.. and have tried it for a couple of months now... my inpressions so far: 1. i dont know if it made any difference to the fish.. still on the fence there. 2. I sent a few out to some prostaffers and have yet to hear back from them.. 3. When they say "clear" that is decieving, when i applied it as a clear top coat it did alter the color.. for example: the uv over a green pumpkin head gives it a kind of purple sheen.. not clear. i have only tried over black and GP but so far both get the light purple sheen.. 4. It does light up under a black light.. you can see the difference.. again i cant see yet that the fish care they still bit, i havent noticed any more bites, but i havent noticed any less either.. 5. I did try mixing some of the uv coat in with the GP powder.. this kept the original color of the GP, but under a black lite it is like it has freckles.. i like this one... 6. as to the durability.. no difference.. it doesnt seem to add or take away.. so, there you go.. Thanks for your report, I think someone else post before that the UV top coat changed the color of the green also, even called the manufacturer to report it. The UV top coat I am looking at testing is only for putting a gloss finish on the jig so I may have another option besides D2T epoxy for a top coat. We also use a matte finish at work, but I'm not sure I would want to use that. I brought home 4 oz. of the coating Tuesday, now I have to find a UV light for curing the coating. Want to check out how wide the opening is on those UV dryers they use at nail salons.
