3m Mask

Recommended Posts

Are the filters on that mask replaceable, and how long do they last, typically? I would store the mask in a plastic bag.

I use the disposable mask. They seem to last a long time but I can't be specific. I updated my exhaust booth and don't use the mask very ofter any more. I just wipe out the inside w/ Listerine before every use.

My dad works in the coal mines and brought me a 3m 6300 mask from work. Does anyone know if these will work as well???

The 6300 mask should be fine to use as long as you have organic vapor / acid gas cartridges in it during use.

I doubt things have changed dramatically, but about 15 years ago I was a 3M trained & certified respirator fitter / tester for an aircraft paint shop...

Here are a few important considerations:

  • Be sure to get the right size (small / medium / large) for a proper fit and seal on your face.
  • If you have facial hair (beard) - it will not seal properly. To quote 3M, "tight-fitting respirators should not be used with beards or other facial hair that prevents direct contact between the face and the edge of the respirator."
  • Consider that a full face respirator will help prevent plastisol vapor coming into contact with your eyes. This is dramatically important in the event of burned plastisol which will produce chlorine gas. When chlorine gas comes in contact with moisture (like the moist tissue in your eyes) it produces hydrochloric acid. Not a good thing to have in your eyes even in minute quantity...
  • When not in use, store the respirator in a recloseable plastic bag (i.e. Zip-Loc type). Squeeze out excess air before completing bag seal. It doesn't need a "vacuum pack", just evacuate the majority of the air in the bag. It will help lengthen cartridge life.
  • Before each use (each pouring session) clean the inside surface of the respirator that comes in contact with skin using a disposable alcohol wipe or rubbing alcohol on a clean soft cloth.
  • The fumes and vapors associated with the heating of plastisol are minimal compared to what the cartridges can withstand and therefore should last for a while. However, if at any time during use of the respirator any odor can be detected immediately exchange the cartridges with new replacements.

Hope this helps.

Rick
