Toaster Oven For Jigs With Fiber Guard Melting

Recommended Posts

I have been making jigs with fiber guards for more years than I care to mention. Since switching over to Powder Paint many years ago, I have placed a brass tube over the fiber guard to protect it from the flame from a bunsen burner. Once heated for about 15 seconds, I swish the jig into the paint and then dip it in cool water. I then take the batch of jigs up to the house and place them on the oven rack and heat for 30 minutes on 250° F. This method has worked perfectly on all accounts.

I recently purchased a toaster oven and tried using it to heat up some jigs for dipping in the powder paint. I first started with 250° F, since that temperature has worked for me in the past. After about 30 seconds, the fiber guard melted. I let the oven cool down and tried cooking a couple more new jigs at the lowest setting of 150° F and the same thing happened.

I returned the toaster oven and purchased a different brand toaster oven and I ended up with the same results. Started at 150° F and the guards melted into a ball of mess in about 15 seconds. I did not test the temperature with a thermometer, but plan on doing so when I get home tonight. Do any of you have experience with toaster ovens being used on jigs with fiber guards with any success? Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

Toaster ovens are horribly inaccurate, whats happening is the result of the way the thermostat in a toaster oven works, once it reaches temp it'll cool down until it gets about 5 degrees under temp but then it really heats up, almost 25 degrees over the temp setting. I've tried a few different toaster ovens and they all worked the same way so now I glue the weedguards in after curing.
