bassbum85
I have read the how to and alot of the forum discussion but have a question regarding these molds. I am making my own design and then making a pop mold of it. I know I have to make a pour hole but I read somewhere about a vent hole because I will pour by hand? any help or advice would be greatlly appreciated. Vent holes are a good idea for some designs that have small/skinny parts such as legs or feelers. They are not needed for all molds. if you can show a picture of your design we can tell you if you'll need to do venting. www.novalures.com

I'm not planning on having any small parts though. I'm shooting for massive baits
powerworm
depending on the mass of the bait you made need to incorporate a larger area for extra plastic to draw into the bait while it is cooling...justa thought
Largehead Louie
depending on the mass of the bait you made need to incorporate a larger area for extra plastic to draw into the bait while it is cooling...justa thought ABSOLUTELY! As the plastic cools, it shrinks. If you are making a big bait, make sure to have a deep sprue (pour hole) that will hold extra plastic that will draw into the bait. I will make it deep and maybe larger diameter than I previouslly thought.
mark poulson
I just bought an LC RTV open pour 5" swimbait mold. Is there any way I can keep the top from cupping as it cools, or is this just the nature of the beast?
nova
I just bought an LC RTV open pour 5" swimbait mold. Is there any way I can keep the top from cupping as it cools, or is this just the nature of the beast? It's a little tricky; but yes there is. You pour the bait getting as much plstic in as you can without overflowing, Give it a few seconds to cool a little then put a few more drops in and repeat. This will give you a slightly rounded top; but you have to know when to stop or you will wind up with a hunchback bait. Takes practice; don't expect the best results first time out. www.novalures.com
JSC
Ditto Nova .. If U time it right you can go from one end to the other with a fine line of plastic which builds a "Hump" but takes just a little more to keep out that last little depression Have Fun JSC
HJS
Bassbum – Here’s a pic of a 2-piece mold I made from Durhams Water Putty (pretty much same as PoP). This mold pours 8” long lures for striped bass. Vents are fairly important so that air doesn’t get trapped near the tail as you pour into the other end. A vent will allow the cavity to fill out completely. You can see the vents in the pic. I cut in the vents using a hacksaw blade after the mold hardened… very easy to do… and only needed in one side. You can also see the fill hole and reservoir. If you look closely we’ll see that the larger reservoir hole doe NOT go all the way to the lure. It stops just short of the lure cavity and the rest of the hole is of a smaller diameter. There is a steep learning curve to making 2-piece molds. Good luck.
