FuzzyGrub
Thanks for all the info you shared with me last year. Fishing season came to quick and didn't get to do any. Today I was able make them for the 1st time. I probably remelted about 100 mistakes before getting them to where I liked. I still have allot of room for improvement, but off to decent start. FuzzyGrub
did you use a single rod or a gang of them? If you look in the link you will see 12 single rods hanging from the drying rack (2x4) with an aluminum drip pan below. Two different diameter rods. I am going to make some multi-rod holders next. 4 rods per holder and 3 holders per size rod. Thanks for the comments and again thanks to Bojon. powerworm
geez im porous sometimes i didnt notice the link on your first post. i recently sold all of my dipping rods that we had made they fit into a presto pot and as long as you kept the side to side wind down and not get strings on the others you could do 33 at a time. it was nice to dip 3 times on 6 rods and almost have 200 tubes but then you had to cut the tails! 5-n-culling
totally new to this so i am wondering how exactly do you make your own tubes? you are just dipping those rods into plastic instead of pouring it into per say a worm mold? and then my 2nd question is what exactly are those rods made of or are you buying them from somewhere? and also fuzzy how did you get the tails differant color then the bodys? or are they the same color but just look lighter once they are cut? powerworm
yes he is dipping them into plastic and it looks like he is using long bolts that have the thread end cut off. and on alot of colors of tubes when you cut the tails they will appear lighter as they are thinner and allow you to see light more easily through them. and to get different colored tails you first dip the rods into the color of your tails and then dip a few times for your body color. Yep, I think Powerworm has done this before. The rods are made from bolts from the hardware store. I used two diameters. They are 1/4" X 4.5" and 5/16" X 4.5" shoulderbolts with the heads cut off. For the single horizontal dipping rods, the handle is made from a thick coat hanger wrapped around threads and sandwhiched between washers/nuts. I added a couple of pictures to the link, one showing the dipping racks I just made. If you have and questions, please ask.
Bass-Boys
wow, great job,, is that 3 dips? what are you heating the plastic with?
FuzzyGrub
wow, great job,, is that 3 dips? what are you heating the plastic with? One full length dip, followed by two head dips. Clipping the strings/tits after each dip. Heating Calhouns Hard w/ additional hardner in a microwave. I need to do better temperature control though. ie sometimes I'm dipping when its too hot, and getting some thin layers. Now that I have my hardware complete, I can start optomizing the dipping and color process. It's a learning process, and part of the "fun" for me. PS: I did try a hot plate with small bread pan, but the plastic smoked allot and never got hot enough. Probably a problem with my hot plate. For the horizontal dipping I heat the bread pan up with the heat lamp and pour the microwave heated plastic into it.
