Central
First off I've never poured lead and plan on starting with the Spinnerbait "H" Mold SJ-3H-X. Problem is I have 1000 7/0 long shank hooks that I'd like to use which are just a bit too thick than the 6/0 max size. As a result when the hook is in I can see that the cavity isn't completely sealed. In order to modify the shank clearance I figure wrapping my hook with wet dry sand paper and sanding away will work, should I use a thinner hook to wrap so I don't over enlarge the chute? Or is this not an issue, I'll give it a go on modified at first but I figure I'll need to modify this to make it ideal.
mkvnmtr
I use larger hooks than are called for in most of my molds. I just use a drill bit the size I need and run it into the mold through the hole that is already there. I put the bit in the mold. Close the mold. The mold will not close completely. Turn on the drill and apply pressure to close the mold completely and the job is done. If a drill bet will not reach I sometimes put a dremel bit in my drill and slowly work each side of the mold until the hook I want to use fits. What ever method you use work a little at a time and check the fit and you should be fine.
sdsaw
Another thing you could try is to sacrifice one of the hooks that you are trying to fit. The molds are cast aluminum and are easy to remove material with the proper tools. Cut the eye off and grind the end off square. This can be used as a scraping tool to widen and deepen the slot. What you want is a sharp edge, the correct size, that will cut. Use a magic marker in the existing slot as a layout dye. This will give you an idea when you actually start to deepen the slot. Try to pull the tool thru the slot while changing the angle to obtain the best results. You can also push the tool thru the slot but be careful of dig in in this direction
Gloomisman
what I typically do is take a smaller hook and put some fine sand paper around it and sand/polish a bit of metal out of the spot on both sides. Takes time but a little at a time will do it.
