Lund1900
I just got through reading the lead topic which was fantastic. Got a question about smoking a mold. If i smoke it with a candle, is it wise to clean the mold afterwards or let the residue stay in the mold. OR is there a better way to get my mold ready to use. Thank you
cadman
I tried smoking molds when I first started pouring, and I found it very messy and didn't do the job everyone claimed to do. This is just my personal opinion. So I have never smoked a mold since. About a year ago someone on this forum recommended mold release by Frankford Arsenal. I've used it, and swear by it. I use it all the time on all my hard to pour molds. Honestly I wouln't waste my time smoking a mold as the results if any are inconsistant in my opinion. I'm sure others will have more info on this as well.
psilvers
Due to Cadman's reccomendation I tried the Frankford Arsenal spray and it is great! Forget about smoking the mold with a candle, go with the rankford Arsenal spray, it is light years better! Pete
Jig Man
I don't like smoking molds but did on one of my poison tail molds. It just wouldn't pour any other way (even cracking it). It works fine now. I smoked it and wiped all the stuff off the flat surfaces. I left the cavities smoked. It is cheap and if it works you won't have to buy anything. FuzzyGrub
FWIW: I did my 1st lead pouring this winter, using the mold release by Frankford Arsenal. ie from the good advice provided here. It looks like spray on carbon. My 1st pouring went very well, and will continue to use the mold release in the future.

I use it also and it works wonders, also makes your jigs super smooth and look very professional.
