haxx5300
I am wondering what everybody's thoughts are on swivels for spinner baits?? Ball bearing or not to ball hearing?? Is there a huge significance when you're using relatively large blades anyway?? That being said, what is considered a good price on them?? I find it difficult to start building spinner baits when, from what I've found, the swivel alone costs $0.50 each. Is this the going rate for swivels with split rings or am I just not looking in the right places?? Does anybody out there have any better pricing that I could check out?? Thanks for any info in advance.
smalljaw
I use Worth ball bearing swivels and they are right up there with sampo, excellent quality but they are expensive, you can save some money ordering in bulk directly from the Worth company but if you want smaller quantities go to Lure Parts online and look under terminal tackle and click on swivels, you'll see one selection that just says spinnerbait swivels, they are the Worth ball bearing swivels in size #2 which will work for spinnerbaits from 1/4oz up to 1/2oz and even 3/4oz depending on what size blades you wouild use on that bait. The cost for 100 swivels is around 56 dollars so they are expensive but they perform flawlessly, I have purchased imported ball bearing swivels that were much cheaper but there were a lot that didn't spin freely and even the ones that did eventually went bad so it really wasn't worth getting them. The other option you have is to use crane swivels or roller swivels, the roller swivels are good but they arn't much cheaper than the ball bearing swivels and the crane swivels are ok for the price. The big difference in performance between a crane swivel and ball bearing swivel is noticeable if you slow roll a spinnerbait, the ball bearing swivel will spin at really slow speeds were as the crane swivel requires you move the bait a little faster to get the blade to spin. Now depending how you fish you may not see a difference or drop off in performance with the crane swivel but for myself I prefer using the ball bearing model because I can eith burn the bait or slow roll it and have no concerns about the blade spinning, it also depends on if you are making them for yourself and some friends or if you're going to sell them, I'd say if you are making them to sell then by all means use the ball bearing swivel from Woth or Sampo, you'll have to charge a bit more but most anglers don't mind paying a little extra for a better quality bait and the Woth ball bearing swivel will greatly improve your spinnerbait without a doubt. haxx5300
Thanks for the smalljaw!!! If I decide to use crane swivels on some do you have to replace one of the rings with a split ring to get the blade on?? I'm pretty sure this is a foolish question but I'm not scared lol. Am kinda thinking I could do both setups to serve multiple demographics but definitely want to have my ducks in a row. Fatman
About six months ago I got a 1000 size 12 deluxe crane swivels from Hagens for abut $28. They're great for ponies, v-spins (beetle spin style spinners) and the largest spinnerbait size I've put them on is a 3/8th oz. from a pack of pre-formed I bought at Janns. They worked ok but not nearly as good as ball bearings, and sm is right .50 cents for a really good swivel isn't all that much. If you overbuy them you can always sell them in smaller lots and make some of it back, if you buy in bulk. Fatman
