AlbyDogGone
Hey guys, I am usually not in this forum, but I am thinking of pouring some jig heads and was wondering about the powder paint. It seems simple enough based on the tutorials and places to purchase the paint. My question is where you can get a "dark green" or more natural green color. Most of the places that I have looked at that were suggested do not have this color, only a bright green or somehting like that. Also, if no place sells this, is it possible to mix powder paint to create a different color??(i.e. "yellow and blue make green??") Any help would be appreciated. Also, when you order a jig mold, where is the easiest and cheapest place to get the lead for melting?? Thanks again... Alby
Markell
AlbyDogGone, I have had good results with mixing the powder. My recipe book is out in the shop but I have mixed some nice dark green colors. I will try to find them. I keep the mixed colors in baby food jars. The best advice I could give is to play with it. For the lead, I would look at tire shops. I buy mine from a local indoor shooting range but it is a pain to get into ingots.
Markell
Here are a couple of dark green heads that I have mixed. As you can see, it is not a true mix of the colors but I like the effect of the mixing.
Gr8flyz
I've played with using powder paints a few times, and have tried mixing it. I get a speckled looking paint up close, but at a distance the mixed colors look fine. I don't have a problem with it as I've never believed solid colors looked very natural anyway. Is that normal for mixing powder paints? I would like to start using them more.
brian ranger619
Jim what is happening is the paint particals are different sizes. that is where your speckling comes from. you will find as I have that, it take a lot of some colors to make another color. "black" will be one that you use a lot of. I now have enough colors I can just about match anything you want. all by trial and error. if I can help you out in anyway just give me a shout. see ya!! brian
AlbyDogGone
Thanks for the tips, I really like those greens you posted Markell. Would you mind posting the colors and mix ratios when you get a chance? I'd appreciate it. I also agree that some color variation and speckling look a bit more natural than a solid color. Thanks for the tips guys. Alby

Markell
Brian is right about the black. You will use quite a bit of it. The colors are listed in the description of each pic. I do not know what the ratios are. I just add & mix untill I get what I am looking for. I use dark natural colors for my bass jigs. so I start off with a base of say pumpkin, brown, bright green etc... then add black untill the desired effect is achieved. It is hard to mess up because if you add enough black it will work
