abf
Hey guys, I just got my new do-it shad head jig mold in the mail yesterday. The only hooks I saw that would fit this mold are the eagle claw 630 & 635 hooks. I was kinda dissapointed in the sharpness of these hooks. I have been pouring about 10 other styles of jigs for a while now and have always used mustad jig hooks with good results. Does anyone know of a good sharp hook that will fit this mold? I'll mainly be pouring the 1/4oz, 1/2, oz and 3/4 oz heads. Thanks Adam
smalljaw
The Mustad 91715 hook should fit that mold, is a Duratin hook for saltwater but should be fine in fresh water, maybe someone knows a little more.
cadman
Adam, I don't have that mold so I can't check hook sizes for you. However on the smaller sizes you want to pour I believe Owner makes a hook match and so does Gami. I do have the 635 hooks and I have matched them to Owner and they are a perfect match. However I don't have these hooks marked so I don't know if the Owner hooks are 5313 or 5319. According to Barlow's Gami hooks #2894, #111 and #604 "Should" fit many Do -It molds that use the 630/635 hooks. Maybe someone else will chime in and give you more info. I will keep looking though and If I find anything I will post it. If you buy hooks and they fit let us know and post it here.
Ogajiga
Adam, how much do you want to spend on hooks? I assume you're targeting coastal salt water species? Mustad 91715Ds on the low end are stronger than 635 IMO but point quality of the ones I used to use was mediocre. But heck, an EZ Lap hone doesn't take long. Owner 5313 is expensive but super sharp & strong. They make an even stronger 3x hook that is too expensive for me to inventory, so I haven't examined any yet. Gamakatsu 604s usually do not interchange size for size with 635 having narrower gaps, shorter eye legs, and smaller diameter eye rings. Sometimes, a Gami 604 size or two over 635 might fit. Gamakatsu 2554 2x steelhead jig hooks have even shorter eye legs. Mustad 91725D is a long shank round bend heavy wire in between priced salt water hook that not many know about. Ultra Point sharpness & wire temper strength is as good as it gets. But, eye legs are shorter and point gaps are narrower than 635. Supposed to be made 3/0 thru 5/0 but Barlow's only had 3/0 size last time I checked. Forgot, Mustad 32833 2x steelhead hooks are a possibility, but they also have way shorter eye legs than 635. Barlows is a good place to compare brands & prices. Edited June 11, 2011 by hawnjigs
cadman
Adam, On the use of Eagle Claw hooks. I know many guys don't like them but I will tell you one thing and that if you touch up the points like Hawn jigs said, the hooks are sharp and they are strong. I have used a 410 EC hook on my Snootie jigs, and I have caught well over a couple hundred bass on those hooks. The hooks stayed sharp and have never failed me. The only drawback is that they are bronze hooks, and on bronze hooks you have to let them dry thoroughly before you put them in a plastic closed box otherwise they will rust. abf
Thanks for the help guys. These heads will most likley be used only in freshwater for a soft swimbait head. I will try to order a couple packs of hooks today and let you know how it turns out. Love the site by the way!!!
