What Too Order ?

Recommended Posts

Please make believe you are me..

What would you order to get started ??

I do have many different sizes of Jigs that I can use to invent fish takers..

I am now disabled and wish to make through wire lures, spinners, and order split rings, blades, Hooks, Wire, Etc to save on funds and have something to do.. I wish to use only stainless steel wire and the questions I have to start with are;

1. What should I order and from whom ?? I have some catalogs and have the net..

2. I have prices from McMaster-Carr so far but do not know if I should just get wire from one source to save on total bill.. I am thinking to get ¼ lb so I can save and not have to worry of running low, or should I just get 30 feet of..

3. What size do I order for what I wish to do ??

4. Should I order different size wire or can one size do it all ??

5. Can I bend my own split rings and have them be reliable ??

6. What sized treble hooks should be correct for a 3” / 4” / 5” lure ??

7. Should I order a wire former or build one ??

A. If I order one what is the one too get considering I am poor now ??

Thank you "VERY" much for your time, interest, and consideration.

WOW ok here go's:

First of all Jann"s Netcraft has the best prices for everything.

Wire size is up to you, I have three different sizes the biggest is 105 lbs. test depends what your building it for.

I get the 30ft. rolls.

Buy the split rings and the pliers also.

Biggest treble I use is 1/0.

Wire former I use is from Netcraft Tack-L-Tool.

Get the kit comes with the book and wire to practice on, its only $27.99

Good luck and don't forget beads for the spinners, you'll need small ones before and after the clevis to get the blades to spin.

Also go to www.tacklemaking.com for other questions you might have you may also get some ideas from it also.

I don't want to step pn toes here but Janns isn't the best price for everything, to make things simple use the net and bookmark Janns netcraft, Barlows tackle, Lure parts online (Stamina), using those 3 you'll have access to everything you need and will be able to quickly compare prices. As for the wire, what are you fishing for? If you're making spinners for bass then you'd probably want wire that is around .029 diameter, a little smaller or larger is ok but somewhere around that size, for trout and/or panfish you can go a little smaller. Split rings aren't expensive, and making them yourself is going to be very hard so buy those. A wire former will be your best friend, I heard a lot of good things about the Janns Tack-L-Tool but I also heard it is hard to learn but if it were me I'd save up and get a boggs tackle maker, very user friendly, I don't make in-line spinners so I get away cheap as I use the little blue bender and round nose pliers, and yes, round nose pliers you will need also. The money you need to get started to make the type of lures you want will probably be around $200 or so, the start up costs is what usually deters guys, especially the ones that want to do it to save money. Now that being said I can tell you from experience as well as everyone else here can attest to, you will not save money, it is very addicting, especially when you begin to catch fish on your creations and then your mind starts going and seeing other peoples creations will give you ideas for even more lures and the next thing you know you have a ton of money wrapped up. One thing though, the money is well worth it, if you like fishing it is one of the most rewarding hobbies you could do and it is a great way to get rid of cabin fever during the winter months if you live in an area that make fishing in winter tough unless you ice fish...lol. Look at those sites and when you need more help there will be someone here to answer your questions. Good luck.

I am going to have to agree with Smalljaw here. There is no way you will save money with the initial startup. By the time you buy everything, now you have to put it all together which is labor and then fish it. It is cheaper to buy and be done with it. In order to succeed in this venture you have to do this for several reasons. #1 Make your baits just for the passion of creating something from nothing and to fill in some unaccounted time. #2 Like metioned "Cabin Fever" or "Retirement". #3 To make your baits and then sell them for a small profit. That would be the only reason to make your own baits. Other than that it can get very expensive very quickly. Look at all of your options and decide if that's what you want to do. By all means it is a very relaxing hobby for me and the new innovations guys come up with keep me going. I also battle with myself to be the best that I can and to push myself to do better. But that is me and I enjoy it this way tremendously. Finally, my one and only reward to this is to help guys learn how to do this and get better at it. I've always like to help others out.

Well I am going to be doing it basicly to enjoy it..

I used to build models as a kid, and then went to building renovations.. Besides lures and more I am going to make wood items and welding items like smokers..

I am planning to donate fishing items to what I believe to be hero's, doctors, nurses, teachers, military, and kids that can show they are not scumbags..

I wish to stay with my favorite fish, Northern, Crappy, Walleye, Trout, Salmon.. As far as materials, Bear (Ole Lady) does bead stuff (And so much more) and has THOUSANDS of all kinds of beads, I bought a air brush, have a couple thousand jigs painted, and made a bobbin to tie..

I have also about every wood machine to make about anything but need to get someone that can help BUT are having a hard HARD time to find anyone wanting to really work instead of talking about it.. It does suck to be in a chair most of the time tho and the other time in bed doing therapy..

I'm thinking to start with making some lures out of the couple of thousand wine corks and turn them into frogs, mice, poppers, etc..

Where do I start besides just get home from shopping and got a fishing paper in the process..

Thanks to all for info as I ask for help as I have info overload and do NOT wish to order blades, wire, etc, etc, etc and find I went the wrong direction..

Well since you got a game plan, let me help with the info overload...lol. Before you order stuff check store bought/ big manufacturers lures out on the net, often times sites will tell you the blade size, wire diameter and hook size of a lure they produce and this will be your guide and then you can improve upon that design by changing blade sizes, wire diameters, different types of hooks etc. The key is research, look at lures that you would like to make and see the components used and let it help you and if tyou get stuck on something there will always be someone here to help.
