Gloomisman
Well I needed a few specialty hooks so I tried the teflon pins. To say the least they are alot better then the ones that come with do it molds. No tools needed. They pull out with two fingers. The only thing I am somewhat worried about is over heating. They get real hot real quick. I let them cool before ruining them. I also tried painting with them. The paint can be wiped off with you fingers or a towel. Simple. I did not bake the heads with pins in them. I put the pin in then dipped. Only draw back I have found so far is if the mold is slightly open the pin will or can fall out. Then you will have lead all over. So far it was well worth the couple bucks. Especially in the time I have saved not fighting pin removal. smalljaw
Gloomisman, those pins are really great and I can help you with them falling out. Simply put a small bend in the pin, when you place it in the mold the bend will force it against the sides of the cavity and will keep it from falling out. Vodkaman
Gloomisman - The melting point of teflon is 327C (621F), which also happens to be the melting point of lead. Due to the excellent thermal conductivity of aluminium, which is sucking heat out of the lead as soon as it is poured, you get away with it, but you are working well beyond the upper use temperature of 285C (545F). Teflon (PTFE) also has a very low thermal conductivity, which means they cool down very slowly, so it is a good idea to have enough pins to rotate their use in a production enviroment, to allow them to cool as much as possible. You are probably already doing this, as the pins have to be extracted from the castings. Dave
Gloomisman
thanks guys. I just poured about 30 more heads and these things save a ton of time from fighting with the pins.
