Making Your Own Molds

Recommended Posts

Wondering how hard it is to make molds that you pour lead into. I would like to make a minnowhead and a chubhead mold with the crane sweivel out the bottom; like on a roadrunner. I think I could just use the minnowhead jig and put a small piece of modeling clay in the spot for the crane sweivel. Once poured I could cut a slit in the mold wall for the swevil to fit the end into the head. What do you think? Any suggestions on what mold material is best?

You could use Durhams water putty or POP, both of those will work but make sure you dry them before pouring because we all know what molten lead does when exposed to moisture. Check out Larry Dahalbergs site, I think it is called make lure. com or something close to that, he shows a lot of alumilite products and some of those will work for lead.

I was looking for a good modeling clay when I found a cheap and easy to use clay. I was at Walmart in the arts and crafts sections and found something called baking clay. I made the design I was looking for out of a used lure body and pressed it out in the mold coating the entire thing about 3/4 inch thick and baked it by the directions on the box. I made a lot of lures from this mold. A suggestion that I have is using this do not compress the mold to much or this will cause the lure to lose its shape.

i made a slab spoon mold out of wood with my router and a 1/4 inch straight bit just drawing the slab spoon on one side of a block of wood setting the depth of the bit

to half the thickness of the slab spoon and follow the lines run some chalk around the edge of the slab spoon mold i just cut and press the second block of wood together in a vice and draw a line across the two wood blocks front and back on the top side.

pull it apart draw the now matching copy and router out that the same way,put the blocks back together in the vice and drill a hole into the mold so you can fill it taper the top so the lead flows well into the mold,

now add wire across the slab area, and match the mold halfs together in the vice squeeze tightly so the wire will press into the wood

pour lead let it cool ,it smokes a little and the mold inside turns black but it works you can get about thirty slabs out before it cooks it and

only takes about 20 min to make
