Unhappy with new lee pot

Recommended Posts

I got my new lee 24oz. pot from lurecraft and tried it 3 times so far and I'm sending it back. It has burned the plastic every time I've used it. The first time I used it I read the instructions and did it just like it said and it burnt the plastic. The next time I did the same thing but turned it down a little, and it still burnt the plastic! The last time I used it, I had the thing turned all the way down to it's lowest setting but it still burned it. The other thing that I didn't like about it is, all my baits use salt and I left a little of the salt plastic on the sides of the pot that wouldn't pour out till the next day. Well the thing rusted really bad just overnight. I would think they would have built this thing out of stainless steel so it would't rust!!!!!!!!! Is it possible I got a lead pot and not a plastic one? If the Lee pots are all like this I will never buy another one.

I gotta ask you this. How long have you been using production pots? In my post about pouring Senko tails, you stated that my using small metal measuring cups to pour tails was a waste of time, and that I should use the production pot. Once I did a search for "production pot" I found your post from a week ago asking which was the best to buy. Now, I read that each time you've used it, you've burned the plastic. Have you actually poured fluke tails with one of these pots?

Was your answer to my other post based on experience, or based on what you've read? There is a world of difference in my opinion.

Spend the extra money and buy a high quality pot. Life is too short to be swearing at those Lee "Lava Making" Pots. There are a few good ones like Rite Hete, Sta-Warm Electric and Wenesco, these will last you forever. Like a good pair of waders, you'll soon forget the cost when your not thinking about leaks and getting cold feet.

Sounds like a lead melting pot to me, but the news ones are labeled "for pouring lead only" right on the front. I guess it's possible that you got an older one.

I too have had my share of problems with salt in a Lee pot. Some guys have no problems, but I just haven't figured it out yet.....without a fair share of cussing. :|

Dont feel like the lone stranger on the big pot over heating, I used mine 2x and it scorched plastic on setting of #2.

Yes the plastic was stirred, No salt, and heat stabilizer added.

I got fed up with both lee pots and use them only when I have to pour large ammounts and do it as quickly as possible.

Take the pot apart and look at the coils, the lead pot has an extra coil around the container.

When I first got mine I burnt a lot of batches until I wore out the container from cleaning it..when I ordered a new container, I also ordered a new element..much cheaper than letting it sit wasted or selling it on ebay.

I still tend to burn a batch now and then but like anything, it takes practice and, since I have more than one pot I have found that each pot with each type of plastic takes a different setting...also the amount in the pot helps determine the setting.

I've also found it better to prep the plastisol in the microwave and pour it into the pot for lure pouring.

And take it from a guy who grew up in the salt marsh, anything salt will rust anything metal.....when you are done using it, clean it out and coat it with worm oil.

Didnt know about the dual element, Will have to look at that. I know that I hate the thermo couple, I was looking at bypassing it to have more controll of the heat. (lower heat and more constant temp)

I have a smaller pot, it didnt burn the plastic when it was newer, but it has wild heat/cooling spikes even when you dont touch the control knob.

I have cooked the plastic in the microwave then transfered it to the pot for quite a while now. Its MUCH faster at the verry least.

I have a hard time justifying the price of the other pots. Expecialy since I have enough pyrex cups that are paid for.
