Best Finds/buys?

Recommended Posts

I recently reclaimed a book shelf that was laying on the side of the road in Greensboro NC. I saw it on my way to work and decided if it was still laying there the next morning, I'd carry it home and put it to use in the shop. Kept it out of the land fill.

I mounted it to my work bench and have spent all day loading it up and better organizing my work space. Free

The work bench itself was nothing more than excess lumber my brother in law had from one of his many work sites(contractor). He sold me enough lumber to build a 15' long X 2.5' deep table I mounted to the garage wall. Cost $15 for the lumber and the mounting hardware being less than $20. Less than $40 and it's built entirely out of 2x4's and 2x6's

The microwave I have used for about 2 years came from a flea market for another $5.

My jig tying station was an old teachers desk my mom bought me in Jr High so I'd have a place to study. I've had that old thing for over 30 years. It wasn't free, but it's paid for itself with longevity.

My dad gave me another old metal desk with 6 drawers he used for over 40 years in his office. It's been used as storage and a very cluttered work top this past year. Free to me.

My wife worked at Lowes Home Improvement for about 5 years. She was given a bunch of stackable plastic shelves that were heading to the land fill. I ended up with 2 of them. They make for a very nice place to hang spinnerbaits and muskie plugs because of the slotted shelf design. Free.

Obviously the bait molds, jig molds, supplies and other things are going to run into real money, but the majority of my work station was dirt cheap.

How have you guys assembled your shop? What reclaimed materials have you used to cut costs? What unconventional materials did you guys use to save money so you'd have more cash to spend on supplies? Enquiring minds want to know

Patrick, I live in Summerfield and just spent weeks cleaning out my Mom's house in Greensboro. Had I know you were such a scavenger, I'd have called you up!

I got a lot of tools and furniture, including a professional oak workbench, from relatives. We live in the Disposable Age. It's not hard to come by stuff. Besides my workbench, I've gotten airbrushes, compressors, saws and other power tools for nothing. Just have to be in the right place at the right time
