mark poulson
I see one commercial seller is molding his stick baits with the O ring inside. Has anyone here tried that yet?
SmokeyJ
I'm not sure how well it works with the o-ring molded in the bait, but I have used a small spring for wacky rigging. You screw the spring in the center and trim it flush, then you rig your hook down through the center of the spring and then out between the coils at a 90° angle. I don't know if that description makes sense, but I do know that it dramatically increases the durability of the middle of the worm and it probably would be no more difficult to mold a spring in than an o-ring. mark poulson
Thanks Smokey. That's and interesting idea. I will try it with a hitch hiker. As for pouring the worm with an O ring inside it, I am just toying with the idea, and wondered if anyone had already tried it, before I go ahead and make a mess. I'm guessing it might interfere with a good injection, but I guess there's only one way to find out.
cintaskevin
I've tried it and don't like how it looks Mark. When you make em like we do, I don't care if I use a bait for every fish I catch.
SmokeyJ
I thought he meant completely inside the bait with the hooked thru the coils of the spring. I was thinking old click pen springs might be perfect for that. Clip the tight end off. Screw it straight in the side. Clip it off at the surface of the worm. Insert your wacky hook through the center of the spring. Might be even better to bend the worm and screw it in along the length of the worm. It would grip and be supported by more of the worm. That is what I meant. I see what you're saying about the spring going length-wise, but honestly the other way has worked well enough that I haven't thought about changing it. I'll see if I can get some pictures up tonight. Edited August 3, 2011 by SmokeyJ

Bob, That's the way I read it, too. If I add enough salt to make my stick baits sink like a senko, they are very fragile, just like the senko, so don't think they'd take a spring screwed into them very well. But the cast like a bullet, and sink faster, too! Edited August 3, 2011 by mark poulson

But the cast like a bullet, and sink faster, too! use heat shrink tubing. cut it into 1/4" or shorter sections slide it over the worm & put the hook through the heat shrink ( poke a hole through it with the point ) and through the worm at the same time. works awesome. Jeff Jeff, I do the same thing with pieces of drinking straws now, almost lke a fat O ring, except I do pass the hook through the straw section from one side to the other. The problem is the worms break at the point where the hook goes through them, just like when you wacky rig a senko without an O ring. The O ring stick worm I saw had the O ring positioned so the hook only had to barely penetrate the worm to reach the nearest edge of the O ring, so it didn't weaken the worm too much. Pitbull Baits
This idea was on a couple years ago. I think someone put a dryer sheet in the middle of a stik bait. I guess it worked well from what they said. Not sure how far you can search back anymore.
