MR KNOW IT ALL KIND OF
Ok SOFT PLASTIC EXPERTS..THIS DIPSTICK NEEDS YOUR HELP Potatoe Fat finally decided to make a soft plastic paddle tail style swimbait. I will post pictures of the bait later when I figure this crap out... I purchased Lurecraft Paint. Wish I had called them to ask but now its Saturday night and I figured they arent open. what is best way to spary lurecraft paint in an airbrush? Do you thin it? How do you clean out your gun when your done? Do you use the clear paint lurecraft sells to clear coat it? Can you thin it with other household products other than the stuff they sell that says it keeps it from drying fast.. I tried to spary my first bait other day with the stuff and it dry faster than I could get it out of the gun. Thanks guys, The Rookie

Thanks guys, The Rookie i usually mix 1:1 with their retarder to thin and extend the pot life. spray through and airbrush and clean it with their thinner. i have several cans of their clear just to use to mix a little hilite powder in it, otherwise the clear isnt needed. i dip all of my swims in clear plastic after applying 3d eyes. locks in the eyes and makes the paint pop. MR KNOW IT ALL KIND OF
exactly as SHK said works everytime just dont forget to dip afterwards to get the best effects!! So you guys don't use the clear paint they sell to clear coat your paint job. I assume you mean your dipping them in the hot clear plastic. (Same stuff you used to pour your soft plastic bait correct) Sorry if that is a stupid question but I just want to be sure... My question is won't that melt the cured bait some and you loose your detail?
Frank
If you have details in the mold then yes you will loose it. Like scales and fins. It does make the paint come alive but when it is in the water it will do the same. I just dip up to the eyes and leave the details. I have been working on an eye mold today so I wont haved to dip. They will be made of the same plastic as the bait so it can be glued on and no dipping. You can clean out your airbrush with acetone right after. I fill the cup and use a small brush to loosen things upwhile I push the trigger down. It is a pvc compound so keep that in mind.Frank
mark poulson
Can the paint be applied with a brush, like the dry brush technique? Or a toothpick, to make patterns?
MuskyGary
Can the paint be applied with a brush, like the dry brush technique? Or a toothpick, to make patterns? I use a Q tip. Doesn't always look professional, but Im not selling anything and they do catch fish. Rember to use the retarder 1:1, this paint dries FAST without it! Rember to use the retarder 1:1, this paint dries FAST without it! I also use a Q tip,and the small sponge eye shadow brushes.Using them very dry makes a pretty good blend of colors.Takes some practice, but cheaper than an air brush, and a whole bunch less trouble, plus the added feature of just throwing away when finished. You can also use El Cheapo acrilic paint sets from the hobby store, but you have to handle them carefully, after painting,to protect the paint film, till they are dipped in clear. These are for my own use,so I paint for catching fish, but not selling to others. powerworm
to use the airbrush it is alot more sensible to shoot alot of baits really quick and i use paperclips i have bent and stick in the tail hole where the insert was and hang them from a piece of latt board i have like 50 holes drilled in so they are all facing one direction then i just walk down the line and shoot the back color if they want or need a belly color i turn them around change guns and shoot that by the time i have that done my plastic in my homemade dipping pot is done and i just dip them all and rehang then go back and cut the strings off same as dipping tubes
mark poulson
If you use acrylic paints, to you have to hit it with a hairdryer to set it?
bojon
If you use acrylic paints, to you have to hit it with a hairdryer to set it? I don't use a hair dryer for my dry bush method. It dries almost as fast as it hits the plastic.I agree that using a airbush finish will look better, and with an investment, and a lot of practice, and with the trouble of constant cleaning of the airbrush. If you are making a few,or a pilot model, the dry brush method will get you by.Remember to clean the project to remove the oily film on the plastic.I doubt if a fish will care how the lure was painted.
