Is There A Specific Heat You Should Keep Your Lead At?

Recommended Posts

I was pouring shakey head jigs the other night and i had problems with the mold filling out. Should i take the heat down a bit when pouring? Does that even make a difference. I had some with holes in them. I had some that didnt pour all the way. Had to melt down several and reboot. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!

A lot of factors at play here, sometimes it may be that the lead or mold or both aren't hot enough but it is seldom too hot. Are you ladle pouring or using a bottom pour furnace? Are you using hard or soft lead? More specifics will make it easier to help find your problem.

That is one of the molds that you must use as pure lead as possible . I have one I've poured twice same problem . Those kind I just hang on the wall and forget until I have to use it. The hotter the lead the better . Resist what many do . That is trying to machine it with a dremel . That only devalues the mold. Crank up the heat and use pure lead.

Clint,

Like smalljaw mentioned there are a lot of factors that come into play to this problem and hard to pinpoint because we are not there. Also whether you ladle pour or pot pour makes a big difference, because of lead cooling when you pour. So below are some more things to try in addition to all of the info mentioned above.

******Heat; molds and lead never seem hot enough however cranking a pot to 10 isn't the answer either.

******Lead is a factor, however I haven't found a lead that I can not pour with consistency and a lot of prep before hand.

******Fluxing a must.....Read above the pinned thread.

******Lead mold release a must, makes life sooooo much easier.

******Warming your hooks to hot will help as well.

******Mold position, tilted forward, backward, side to side all things to try.

******Gap the mold a bit to see if you get full pours and flash. If you get both, back off on the gap to the point where no flash occurs.

These are some things to try, and make sure you write down what you do so you don't have to do trial and error again.

I'm sure there are many more things I didn't cover.
