fatfingers
The precision he displays as he carves with a knife blade is really something. It is easy to see that he shows a lot of pride in the work he does. The precision he displays as he carves with a knife blade is really something. A-Mac
i wonder what type of wood that is... it carves very very well. also, that foil process is crazy. since i almost always have some sort of glue on me, i see that process becoming a disaster in a hurry. it would be even worse if I was using pure silver like this guy too! I was wondering the same things. That wood carved perfectly, with no grain that I could see. Maybe it's not wood, but some kind of fine grained, strong foam or resin. Either way, he's a master! I've watched silver leaf being applied to ornate mirror frames, and it is really thin, flexible, and strong. If he's using real silver, I'm guessing it's adhesive backed, so he just has to remove the paper backing and smooth it onto the lure. Kris
I used to do some carving years ago. Thought about giving lures a try ... It looks like it might be Basswood or Tupelo. Both are great for carving and can be either hand carved or powered carved. With a sharp carving knife they carve like butter.

SmokeyJ
Found his blog and it is a treasure trove of information, although the Google Translate doesn't really do it justice: http://ginei-handmade-lure.blogspot.com/ From poking around on there it appears there are a couple different types of wood that he uses. I think I did nail one that he uses down to quarter-sawn Alaskan Yellow Cedar, which I know is popular with saltwater builders. If anyone knows Japanese they might be able to figure out what other woods he uses from this post: http://ginei-handmade-lure.blogspot.com/2010/10/blog-post_15.html

kejeon
Guys, I think this guy use basswood, and a very sharp knife. I know some of you may think harborfreight sells cheap tools, but this one is different. It's not cheap for tools at HFT, But still a deal for 5 sharp and durable knives. http://www.harborfreight.com/5-piece-woodcarving-chisel-set-95064.html I use those to carve basswood and I love them. It's as sharp as xacto, and I don't have to worry the thin blade.

Jed You're right about that! I recently made the mistake of carving some detail for an hour with a thin handled exacto knife. My hands hurt for a week!
