nastyboys
Having a problem pouring 9inch swimbaits. I am using a 2 piece pop mold and the baits are caving in not sure maybe i need a larger pouring hole
Jig Man
You may be pouring too fast and the mold is not getting completely as the plastisol gets close to the top.
nastyboys
I tried pouring really slow did not solve the problem the baits are big i think as they start to set up they and suck the plastic out of the reservoir i tried to refill it but no help. maybe i have to make a new mold with a bigger reservoir. Vodkaman
Your proposed solution sounds like a good idea. The plastic does shrink and does need topping up. Dave
powerworm
you are on the right track that is exactly what is causing your baits to "cave" or have dents is there isnt enough of a reservoir on hot plastic to draw into the cavity as the bait cools
mark poulson
You can make a reservoir by wrapping the top of the mold with duct tape that extends up past the mold another 3/4". It will hold enough plastic to allow for the shrinkage from cooling.
nova
Make sure that the hole going into the mold at the bottom of the sprue is large enough.(at least 1/4" dia.). The plastic is cooling too fast at that point and closing off the reservoir; then the plastic continues to shrink in the bait causing the dents. Just re-seal the new holes. You can still use the the same mold, just make sure that you pour slowly into the reservoir once it's full so that the hot plastic is flowing through the neck as it gets sucked down into the mold. This will keep that area open to the flow of plastic. www.novalures.com Edited September 20, 2011 by nova
tigerfire
Would using an injector solve the problem or will the shrinkage still occur?
Vodkaman
Would using an injector solve the problem or will the shrinkage still occur? You would still need to top off. In fact, because of the size of the bait and the small injector nozzle, you may have to top up several times. Dave
powerworm
i hate to disagree with mark but 3/4" is not going to be enough of a sprue area for a 9" bait and an injector is doing the same thing as qwhat you are doing pouring and you will still need a larger sprue area to defeat the dents!! Pitbull Baits
Where is the dents or caving in at? Can you post a picture?
