Denatured Alcohol

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm looking to purchase some denatured alcohol, but having a hard time finding it. Looking online its starting to confuse me. My understanding its 99% ethanol, with an additive so its undrinkable?? Its used for marine stoves etc.

I purchased some acetone at home depot, but have a feeling its not the right one I'm looking for. Or is it?

Can anybody provide some exact brand names and store locations they have found it at?

I have the following stores around me, Michaels, Lowes, Home depot, Home hardware, Walmart, Timbr mart

Thanks,

C

The Lowes store near me carries both acetone and denatured alcohol along with quite a varied selection of other solvents. Most of which are used in painting. "Crown" is the brand name of the denatured alcohol as well as the acetone that is carried by my local Lowes.

Ben

Ummm I think "Crown" comes in a purple bag and is good for cleaning your kidneys!!

haha ya that would be somethin to see, be a first for sure...I'm looking into getting some to thin my D2T epoxy for sealing my pop mold. I picked up some methyl hydrate from Home depot the other day. A company called Recochem. The MSDS says its pretty much methanol. Guy working there suggested this one after telling him I was looking for denatured alcohol. Has the same list of uses as other brands of DA on the internet that I've seen. Here's an overview of its uses;

Overview:

Methyl Hydrate is a multi-purpose and highly flammable thinner used primarily for thinning shellac. This product is not suitable for oil-based products or stains. This versatile product is also appropriate for cleaning brushes that have been used with shellac, Cleaning windows, when mixed with water, Dissolving gums, resins, and celluloid, and as fuel for fondues or marine unpressurized alcohol stoves.

I got mine at the pharmacy at a CVS........expensive there though at $11 for a pint. I guess they saw me coming!

Why don't you just use a 50/50 wash of Elmer's glue and water. Flood the cavities and let sit for 30-45 seconds, pour out excess and repeat 3 times. Make sure the pop is "bone" dry before you do this.

Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) works well for thinning most epoxies. Sherwin Williams also sells several epoxy reducers with different affects on the wetting properties of most epoxies. If temperature becomes and issue also look at MIAK or MIBK, typically used to reduce vinyls but effective for slowing or speeding reaction times, respectively.
