J lure
Has anyone attempted or successfully made a hard cast using resin or another hard casting type of material with a two piece aluminum injection mold in order to have a hard casting? If so, what did you use and how did you do it?
Vodkaman
Resin shrinks, which will help. I still think that it is a risky thing to try. It might be better to try with PoP, at least you will have a chance of rescuing your ally mold. Dave
longhorn
What do you intend to do with the hard copy? I'm assuming to make another mold. It's much easier to clone an aluminum mold using soft plastic IMO.
J lure
Well I was thinking I could make a hard cast so I can make multiple rtv molds with the hard cast. Another thing I wanted to experiment with is making a hard swim bait with the same two piece aluminum soft plastic mold... Vodkaman: Do you think I can inject plaster of paris in the mold? Have you done this before, any tips?
Fishermawn4life
I believe this is what your talking about I have started doing it. it seems to work, I never finished but it seems pretty good. I got the resin from home depot requires 2 cans of resin I think. hope this helps!
Travis
Was a tutorial years ago on doing it. Lay mold half on surface build walls around mold half, leaving approximately 1/2 to 1 inch gap between aluminum mold and walls. Fill with hot plastic and let cool. You then peel the plastic off and it now is a copy of the aluminum mold. Pour plaster of paris or durhams, etc.... into the plastic mold and let set. Demold and now you have copy of aluminum mold half. Hard to see but on the bench are rock puddy molds sitting the soft plastic master. In the past I used 4 other aluminum molds to construct the mold box. You can make hard baits from the tow piece molds also but if using hard mold material can't have undercuts or the bait will lock in plass. RTV is the way to go and gives great results. Basically the "foamie" method to make cranks. Edited October 4, 2011 by Travis
