First Attempt At Deep Runner

Was trying to get a snag-less deep running bait. This thing only runs about 6 to 8 ft deep. It sits in the water with the bib pointing down. The top of the body is fairly flat and wide. When retrieved, it looks like the body is catching so much water that the lure is changing its angle to an almost flat trajectory. I am thinking that the line tie should be moved closer to the body so that the forward section of the bib will have enough pressure on it to counter balance the pressure that is on the rear of the lure. Opinions appreciated. It has plenty of thump and tracks straight and true. I will try to attach pics to this post if it doesn't allow me to do that, I will put them in the gallery. The lure is made of 3/4 inch PVC trim board and has a single 5/0 VMC spinnerbait hook the whiskers are sinker peg stops.

My first instinct would be to move the line tie about half the distance closer to the tip of the bill. If you don't mind experimenting with this lure, drill a small hole in bill half the distance closer to tip and another half the distance closer to the body. Now just rig a temporary line tie from a bit of stiff wire in each hole. Then, you will know which way will work best for this lure.

That's an interesting bait concept. I haven't had much luck moving the line tie closer to the body on deep divers - it tends to tighten the action so much that the bait loses its thump and wiggle, and it will lose all wiggle and become uncontrollable if taken too far. It's hard to predict what mods will work on such a unique bait shape, but my instinct would be to work toward more fore/aft balance with a heavier body and a lighter lip. If you want a slow floating deep diver, I'd try a larger body and/or a lip made from a lighter material like 1/32" thick circuit board. Something along the lines of the old Hellbender crankbait.
