What Is Your Favorite Plastisol?

Recommended Posts

I have been searching this forum for a poll or topic that asks "what is everyones favorite Plastisol?" I can only find a few topics that just covers one or the other brands. If you can point me in right direction that would be great or just let me start that topic again:

What is your favorite Plastisol and why?

Thank you for your help and comments,

Jamie

I've only used Calhoun and MF. Next will probably be caney creek. Dont know why. Anyway. I hated Calhoun. It was smoky, settled bad, and horrible on the bubbles, lastly poured difficult. I switched to MF SS and havent had a single problem. It has non of the above issues.

yup it smokes a bit, but the settling aint bad in the last few batches i ordered and bubbles arent nearly as bad as LW or Chem. i HATED M-F, stuff stunk so freaking bad i got migraines every time i cooked it.

tried a lot of differents plastic...i loved the MF supersoft...but didnt like their hard compound (smoke, turning yellow even with heat stab)...now i am with Caney creek hard and soft (so i can mix them for different textures) since few months...super clear, very few smoke, i just add few drops of heat stab because i pour from microwave, i can reheat sometimes 15 or 20 times (because i actually pour prototypes baits that are single RTV mold,so the baits comes out 1 after 1...) and i dont have any discoloration or yellowing problem....my last order last week cames to europe in exactly 6 days....ouch...a new record...the price seems highter at the first look, but in fact with the international flat boxes packages, i am under or equal to the price of other plastics...i 'd just like to see in the futur bigger sizes, like 55 gallons drums to start my buisness baits with this great product.

Their is some valuable info. Here for a newbie and I think it is ridiculous that I may have to lock this..Nathan

This is my list from personal experiences only. This is my results from trying different plastics. We're all the time getting plastic companies wanting us to switch over to their products, so I've had several chances to try different plastics. If I have not tried it, I will not name it, but the ones that I have tried, this was my personal results. Remember, I'm using heat exchangers and this is a sealed system. The only emissions I get is from the venting of the mold as the plastic fills the cavities.

M-F - customer sent 10 gallons of saltwater plastic to make his baits. My findings were the same as SHK, the fumes were absolutely terrible. I have a 14 inch exhaust fan in a 20x20 space, it gave me and my wife both a headache and messed with our sinuses for a couple of days. As far as the plastic itself, it was not tacky at all when I demolded it and done very well with the colors that I was using. But I did have an issue with the fumes.

Chemionics - was decent enough but was tacky when demolded which seemed to diminish after curing 24 hours but also had a plastic smell to the baits. Seemed to be stronger than others.

Calhoun's - trouble here with this plastic (to me), is nonconsistency. Some people use it and love it and some people have had bad experiences. I believe it has some to do with the quality of the components. I tried 2 samples. This is another one that seems to me to have a strong plastic odor and it was also tacky when demolded, which also seemed to diminish after a 24 hour cure. I have talked to a couple of people who have received bad batches.

LC - This is the plastic I started out with. It does very well in a hand pour situation, but the large amount of hard pack was an issue in my application. The smell seems to be fine and the baits were never tacky when demolded. My only experience with LC's plastic is doing hand pours and hand injections and this was 5 years ago, so I don't know if anything's changed since.

Marchem - the rep came and we ran some samples that he brought. They run well but they were a little tacky when demolded and a pretty strong plastic smell also.

Lureworks - this is the plastic that I currently use and have been using for several years. I use it both in the machine and hand injecting. I like this plastic, it has always been a consistent product and I've never had any problems. I probably use 50 drums a year or more. It's not tacky when demolded and the smell seems to be at a minimum. In the applications in which I use this plastic I have no problems, but others have had issues. The bottom line is you guys, call these companies up ask for small samples. Try them out and find your personal preference because basically that's what it boils down to. I've never met anyone that is happy with every plastic that is on the market, and that's just the facts. Figure out the one you like best and you've found the best plastisol.

Myself, I prefer Calhouns, I don't use the soft plastics. MF is not bad plastic, thing I don't like is that its an oily plastic and does not fish well. Meaning it does not stay on a jighead well. Chemionics is purdy good plastic , smell on the Chemionics disappears the fastests of any I have tried. Marchem , I believe thats the one with the vinyl smell, I could not use that plastic because of the smell. SPike it older formula seemed to be good plastic but if I remember correctly was very thin viscosity and was harder to keep glitter and glow powder suspended.

Ive tried 3 different brands so far with a fourth brand on the way. I have tried calhous, m-f, and spike it with caney creek on the way. I will rate them in this order: #1 M-F, #2 Calhouns, #3 Spike It. The reasons why is i use a microwave to heat my plastic and so far m-f has the best reheat value that keeps its flexability and clear color even if i reheat it in the microwave a dozen times plus it keeps its clear color without yellowing for longer periods of time. Calhouns is a very close 2nd. Spike it pourasol just bubbles up a lot and turns yellow pretty quick atleast it did when I tried it a couple of months ago. I will let you know about the caney creek, it should arrive any day and as soon as I make some new baits I will let you know how it turns out.

when you shoot plastic in a controlled inviroment, sealed system, injection machines there is some smoke, all of them smoke. its when you are shooting in a building that has no ventalation smoke will accumallate fast, more so if the outside temperature is cold. my building has a forced air fan, airconditioner and a exhaust fan. i have shot numerous manufacturers and they all have smoke. i started out with the open pots and hand poored and it was horrible the amount of smoke from all suppliers that filled the building. my present injection machine has two ways of heating, one i can manually fill with microwave plastic (all of the manufactures that i have used is heated to 375/400 degress, agitated in a mixing pot then cooled down to 315 for injection) most present machines use exchangers and you have to do your shooting in a timed manner (scorching/smoking plastic) will happen if the exchanmger is not (water/ induced aircooled). the second way of melting plastic with no smoke is that i pour it in the a agitating tank and heat the chamber to (380-degr) untill plastic reaches 360-degr during agitation, that is the best way (no smoke/sealed system) a tiny amount during injection, depends on your clamping pressure is the key to that issue.to much said already, seal your building from outside conditions and vent your building using induced air fans and exhaust fans

to the caney creek guys , is it so much better than LC green plastic ?(both Phthalate Free) 48 dollaR more for 5 gallon?

Caney Creek cost includes shipping. With LC you pay shipping.

Is it worth it?

I live in CT and LC is the closest plastisol provider to me. Their 5gal costs me $38 to ship to me making a total of $166. For $175 I can get Caney Creek delivered to me. Is it worth $11 more? I don't know - cuz I haven't tried it yet, but from what I've read from others posts Caney Creek doesn't settle out like LC. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

So you have to consider not only shipping cost but product as well.

I'm hoping to try Caney Creek when my current 5gal of LC is gone - but that will probably be a while. I hope Jason will still offer samples when I'm ready to try it...

All I use is Lureworks Pourasol Medium. I nuke it, and have not had an issue since I learned to heat it slower. I have gone through 12.5 gallons so far with no issues. I love it. Low smell, excellent clarity, great durability, cures quickly.

That said, everybody does have their own favorite. What works for some, does not for others, etc.

Try them all and decide based on YOUR results.
