Powder Paint Guns/sprayer

Recommended Posts

This is a tricky question as everyone has their own idea of how much waste is too much. I will tell you what I do, if I'm painting 1 or 2 baits a few different colors then I'll leave the over spray as waste, not much waste once you learn what you're doing but if I'm doing 5 or more baits that have the the same pattern or 3 or 4 different colors then I reclaim the powder. The way to reclaim it is simple and not time comsuming once you get a system, the way I do it is by using platic grocery bags, I made a hanger inside my spray box in which I hang the bag, I put the first color on all my baits and then take out the bag and hang a new one for the different color, again apply the next color to all of your baits and then change out the bags. I've been doing it for years so it is easy for me and takes very little time, but it did take about a month of working with it until I perfected my system and it wasn't expensive, I used a box from a pair of my work boots for the spray box and stuck a paper clip in each side of the box on the top portion to work as my hanger to simply hang the bag on the bent paper clip. I don't use the shop vac like some do, the plastic bags work great as the over spray hits it and falls straight down into the bag. I have little waste like this, in fact is is less than 2oz in more than 5 years, so to me it isn't much. if you go back through the gallery you'll see some of my spinnerbaits I did using the spray system, I think they came out ok, but you'll notice that there isn't any detail, insted it is basically color blending, spraying powder isn't going to let you get a lot of detail as it is impossible to get fine lines as the powder melts but you can get some nice shading effects as well as nice blending of color.

I just bought the badger sprayer and am planning on giving it a try. Bought it mainly for clear coating with powder, but may try some spinners and spoons. I always thought I would not get one, but had a change of heart last week. Figure for the $30 it cost me, may as well give it a try. Need to go to a craft store and find some more jars though.

just wondering can you use any suction type gun for powder paint? was thinking of giving it a try some time thanks.

Doing lures with powder requires a gun about the size of an airbrush, but a standard airbrush doesn't work with powder. Go to TJ's tackle, Barlows, Janns netcraft, etc. to get one or you can go directly to badger and get the model 260 hobby sandblaster. The airbrushs won't work because the nozzels are too small for the coarse powder to go through, even the largest needle isn't big enough to spray powder. So the simple answer to your question is no.
