J lure
When I first joined this forum everyone was throwing around new ideas and bouncing them off one another or showing off some new D.I.Y. project and even new discoveries. Also, it seems like all of the dealers and manufacturers were coming out with a new and exciting product every other day. It seems like everyone is hibernating or even worse fished out!!!! I just was wondering where all the new ideas and new products disappeared to?
Travis
Lots of guys still innovating and making things. Things changed long ago with respect to open discussions on concepts and ideas. It is still done but not in open forums too many guys looking for handouts (with respect to how to, concepts, etc) that give nothing in return and more importantly turn around and try and make a buck. Typically they make an inferior crap product and help flood the market with junk. Chats with invited people, pm, and email are where some have turned to. nova
Man! I didn't know everyone on tackleunderground was actually underground....... In the beginning we shared jusy about everything on here including pics of our ideas. Then; as was stated; we start seeing imitations of our ideas showing up in the marketplace. I had a copy of my "Grumpy" show up in China. Even posed it in the same way I do. Really ticked me off but it was my own fault. I sold a couple hundred to a guy in Cal. who wanted it shipped to his "brother" in the Phillipines. Six months later I see the bait on a Chinese website. Lesson learned. www.novalures.com

But Like everyone else I'm about half afraid to post it . May do it anyway .
MR KNOW IT ALL KIND OF
Here you go DIPSTICK! HARD FLUKE. Darts all over the place. Make it in Floating which is good over underwater laydowns and brush. Slow Sinking is great in winter under docks and rip rap. Fast Sinking used off drops! J lure
So what are we suppose to do to protect ourselves and the DIY lure making process, should we patent and copy write everything before we post? We are going to have to find a new name for this site then.....
Travis
For me I it really never has been a big deal if stuff gets knocked off by big guys but I only make stuff to pay for the habit and not trying to make money. If trying to make money I would approach it differently. My main bone of contention is honestly with the small guy. Too many kids playing, too many internet tough guys, guys that can't figure out how to do the simplest of tasks etc..... At one time you had guys/gals figuring things out. The learned the ins and outs. Sure you needed help at times but people were able to accomplish things without having their hands held at every step. Now I honestly believe that many are incapable of figuring out the simplest of ideas, concepts, colors, etc.. They flood every forum with stupid (yes there are stupid questions forget the PC bullcrap) and at the same time they have websites peddling their "custom" tackle. In my opinion it has turned lure sites into nothing more than social outlets and free advertising space. Sharing of knowledge is great and can really advance skills, techniques, and drive new innovative products, but you have to have the right mix of people. That is the reason why I said that much of it goes on in private chats, pm, and emails. When several guys from different knowledge backgrounds, skill sets, and have common sense it is amazing where things can go. The problem:as I see it; with not carring if the "big boys" copy your invention is that if they patent it you could be held for the infringement if they push it. Maybe I'm wrong but with the way the laws work you never know. www.novalures.com
J lure
I agree with you guys and what your saying! The problem is money talks and it shouldn't be that way but it is....If us "little guys" had the money like the "big boys" then there wouldnt be any problems. I guess that us little guys have to stick togther some how trying to keep the "big boys" from peaking over our fence, and I know that's what everyone is worried about, including myself. As for all the "posers," I guess I would rather them be posing as a custom tackle creator rather then some of the other things they could be doing. Thanks for all the info and the heads up! Frank
While I see the point here, the big boys dont always just knock something off. Once in awhile they buy the little guy out. Didnt manns just buy the arig company. Yum bought the money minnow from a small guy. I think of this site as more of a learning site than a new idea site. Posting how to's and helping others. Somethings are better kept to your self until the time is right. Even having your molds custom made is a thing that could let the cat out of the bag to early. Or having a company pour your baits just to find out they are selling then too on another site that they own. Frank
JSC
Ditto Travis, Nova, Frank. For those really intent on making enough to live on & get "Big" a small % will make it ... I have watched some in their effort to do this and have found thru the years they ask your advice and then go ahead with what they were going to do any way .. You would be amazed at how many thru the years I have seen while on the road as a "jobber salesman" for wholesale fishing tackle, Marine, & Hunting supplies .. ask how to do it & to think they had the "Magic" lure .. More factors than I care to go into are involved .... but have plenty of money (& backing) know how not only to make the product but the know how to manage the whole thing. ... Nuff said ... 3 cents worth and good luck to all of you who are trying to make it big time .... JSC
Toadslinger
Ill give my 2 cents worth on this with very high respect to the guys who have been doing this long before i even tried it. I had come in here just to learn from you guys to pour some baits, I was having a blast asking some of you mentioned above and how to make things and colors work. But then by chance I have also been trying to make a bait work and still cant figure it out and yes its probably simple and im trying to thing to hard, But I then turned to someone in the manufacturing business and asked about making a design and yes a few months later I seen my bait on the internet and I was pissed. So for the few of you I am willing to share what I am trying to do and have fun with, because if I cant get it right I know with the knowledge yall have its probably simple. So did I get a sour taste in my mouth about the big boys copying it... absolutely, but they sure didnt like me calling them up and saying hey whats up with that. simple phone call turned into a person on the other end saying "make more Ill copy that also. So i just said heck with them. I need help from a few of you guys to make something and Im willing to share what it is, just ask and help me get it done. I didnt come on here to make millions i just came on here to have fun and to learn, But when you have an idea it does suck seeing someone profit off your hard work, and they have alot more money than I do. so I have come to the conclusion of having some of you help me if you will. Thanks T
