Hair Jig Making- Need Bucktail Hair And Rabbit Hair- Need Help

Recommended Posts

So I am looking to start tying and painting my own hair jigs this winter. I am looking for only brown hair and black hair of both bucktail and rabbit hair.

Also what is a good jig head and hook preferably with a LARGE barb, I notice that in last spring the smallmouth threw the hair jig more than they through the dropshot and I think it was the difference in the hook and barb.

I am looking for a round head jig and the small football head sizes from, 1/16, 1/8 and 1/4 and I was thinking possibly a few 3/8ths to give a try this season.

Also what are people using to paint them with nail polish? What are you using to ties the hair on and how are you solidifying it on the jig head?

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!!!! Thanks so much!!

For Bucktail and rabbit, I get it all from Bass Pro Shops.

I personally like an EWG hook or an Owner Deep Throat hook for this application.

I use powder paint for all my jigs, no mess no fuss easy to use. Heat gun heats the lead head, dip in powder , rack it and put in toaster oven to cure.

On hair jigs I use Coats and Clark upholstery thread. You will never break it and you can tie it nice and tight.

Cad....what size of that thread are you using? Size 46?

BLT,

It doesn't say what size on the thread. It comes in black, white beige and brown. It's Coats and Clark, 150 yards (137m), Upholstery, Coats extra Strong, 100% Nylon. Thant's all it says on the label. It will not fit a std bobbin as the spool is pretty big. If you want I can send you a pic, pm me your e-mail.

My guess would be you were using a thin wire hook jig. Something that had a Eagle Claw 570 or equivelent. Besides small barbs, they bend out fairly easily. PM Cadman for a good variety of unpainted or painted jigheads.

I have been searching for info to tie my own bucktails, and there are allot of videos and info to get you started, out there. Saw a few on rabbit hair jigs, as well. I haven't dug through the info on TU yet, but sure there are allot of good tips to be found.

I ordered bucktails through LurePartsOnline, but for no other reason that I was placing an order for other spinnerparts. I ordered size E thread, but not because I knew what I was doing. Should be here latter today, and should be making my first over the weekend. :)

Check this link out caddy, this is why I asked. Like 20 different sizes lol.

Can you send me a link as to where you get it? PM'd my e-mail to you. I'm running low on my like 22,000 yard spool, need to get some but want more than just the red and black that I have. Thanks! (my spool said nothing also lol) I'll pm the link. not sure if I can post it.

I use D size nylon thread to tie and use bucktail and zonker strips most all of the time. A good head is the Do-it mold RWR-3-AYS, it is a round head mold that has 3 cavities that are 1/8, 3/16, 1/4 I very seldom need more than 1/4oz on a hair jig. I also use a football head with a flat eye hook the same as the roundhead mold I already mentioned, the football head is fantastic for rocks and pea gravel flats. Another head I had success with and my favorite is the 1/8oz posion tail jig, the EWG hook it uses has an excellent hook up ratio, in fact I don't recall ever misiing a fish that hit my posion tail jigs. Tying isn't hard, it just takes practice but you may want to check out you tube as there are some videos of jig tying. Good luck.
