ROWINGADUBAY
I posted this in the docks area with no help my question is if a peson took an alabama rig and cut the swivels off, then welded/brazed hooks onto the wires would this then make it a five prong treble hook? If so would this make a five or six hook rig(or treble hook) legal for use in all states? I guess my real question is. Is there any laws against using a treble hook (if thats what it would be called?)with five or six points? Any thoughts and or facts about this would be helpful Thanks. bassrecord
AFAIK, a treble hook has three hooks in a cluster, a double hook has two hooks and a single hook has a hook. From state to state and province to province, single, double and treble hooks are legal or illegal, depending upon how, where and what you are fishing for. Going the other way, I'm not sure if quadruple, pentuple, sextuple and so on hook clusters are legal anywhere in freshwater. Certainly the12 hook cluster called the grappling hook is not legal unless you are fishing for or recovering dead bodies. I think I've seen salt water hook clusters more than three but I would not use them inside say California's waters without getting prior CDFW approval - in writing. My advice is to make one up and take it to your state fish and wildlife office and get a written opinion. As tax hungry most states are, it'll probably get approved whenever the state figures out how to sell licenses, or tax us, by the hook! <g> Good luck! mark poulson
I think you'd have a real hard time setting the hook with that many hook points.
ROWINGADUBAY
I was'nt looking to hang a "pentuple" hook from the back of a rapala but to make a castable umbrella rig that is legal in wisconsin that would still give you five presentations. After calling the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource I learned that the legal number of "fish catching objects" is three And my Idea would be illegal I also learned some of my musky baits that came with spreader bars and four treble hooks are also illegal. Thanks
bassrecord
Sorry to hear it's illegal in Wisconsin. Many states have confusing regs, and IMHO sometimes interpret the same reg different ways. My dad once said that every good bass catching idea he ran by a game warden was illegal <g>. BTW the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) has their own set of rules of what is and is not allowed in World Record catches. The IGFA says a catch must be legally caught. So for an example if your spreader bars are illegal in WI but say the bars were legal in Michigan, the IGFA would reject a World Record Musky application if caught in WI but not if caught in MI. If world record status is of concern, the IGFA web site lists their rules and anyone can call their Florida office for legality questions about specific lures or mods. Good luck! bassrecord
Mark, I've got banana boxes labeled, "Dumb Projects," "Won't Work," "Illegal???", "Incomplete," and some so old or bad they are not even labeled. Some even fall into the category of my son asking, "Dad, you're not going to take that out on the lake, are you?" and I asked, "Why?" and he said, "You'll embarass both of us!!!" <g> But it's really, really nice to see someone have something that really works. Last week my neighbor said if I wanted any big trout, come over and I did! They had 10 trout Washington DFW stockers in the back of his truck they were giving away. As I recall 7 were 5-7 pound brood trout and 3 were about 16-20" holdovers. Then they showed me the rigs they had made up that caught them. As you well know, I don't know squat about plastic, wire rigs, terminal tackle and that stuff so I have no clue as to what i was looking at. But I'm not alone. The previous day, before DFW dumped those brood trout into the lake they were fishing, two game wardens pulled neighbor and son over, checked their licenses and said, "Show me them rods. Gesh, no wonder you boys aint caught anything. Yew oughta go to that tackle shop and they'll fix you up!" Jer and his son said they have laughed and toasted the game wardens every day since then cause they have limited out but haven't been checked. It's good to know some people can still come up with lures today that DFW says are legal, but DFW says they won't catch anything, but they work great!!! Keep on keeping on.
