Musky Glenn
Just my two cents worth, but I cut them off first thing because I feel they limit the amount of swing when walking the dog or the side way jump of their jerk baits. BobP
You can buy a bag of chicken feathers at many craft stores, like Michael's. You have to pick through the bag to choose the feathers to trim/use, but it's cheap.
RayburnGuy
Me being a country boy it seems a bit funny to hear you guys talking about buying chicken feathers. And I have no doubt there are things us country boys do that give the city folk a good chuckle. But then we all need a good laugh now and then.

I remember as a kid chasing my momma's rooster all over the yard wanting him to drop a couple feathers to "tie flies", it was lots of fun till the rooster got tired of it and started chasing me. Ben, you just know that bag of feathers cost more than a chicken in East Texas!
RayburnGuy
We used to make a sort of fly for stripers that was nothing but a 4/0 stainless hook with white feathers tied to it with white or red yarn. It would be fished behind a weighted popping cork below the Livingston dam when the stripers would come up busting shad. I won't say what kind of bird it was, but for the price of one .22 bullet we had enough feathers to tie more flies than we could use all year. Tracy G
I don't want to know what kind of bird it was, that might make me an accessory to a crime. lol. But I can get all the white chicken feathers that I want since I work at a chicken processing plant.
