RayburnGuy Posted January 8, 2012 Report Share Posted January 8, 2012 Went to my local Hobby Lobby to pick up one of the Alumilite mold making kits and they didn't have them. They did however have some liquid latex that claimed to be for making molds. Just wondering if anyone has used this stuff and if so what kind of results you got? I went ahead and purchased the stuff and it seems to take quite a while to set up. mark poulson Posted January 9, 2012 Report Share Posted January 9, 2012 Ben, I've never heard of the liquid latex. But I have, and do, use one part RTV for mold making. I use GE Silicone clearseal caulking, and mix in a couple of drops of water. It makes the silicone set up much faster, but it's still strong. I apply it straight to my clay masters, use my finger to spread it and make it an even, thin coat, and then add the watered stuff around that to fill the mold. The alumilite is much easier, and makes better molds with less effort, but it costs too #*X% much! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I let the stuff set up for two days, occasionally warming it with a heat gun, and it was still close to liquid in the center. Mattlures Posted January 10, 2012 Report Share Posted January 10, 2012 the latex is to be painted on in coats. Wait for the first coat to dry then paint on the next. Do this about 5 times and then reinforce it with netting or something. It still if not very good but it can be used. A good use for it is to use it as a paint mask.
