Scaledriver
I have been wondering if stick molds from the different mold makers are basically the same or do some seem to come out better than others? I have a 5 inch stick mold and have trouble with getting dents in the baits. It just might be how I am doing it just was wondering I guess. MonteSS
Hand pour or injection? Which mold do you have? ....Bill
Scaledriver
Oops I should have mentioned that. I have a 5.25 inch stick injection mold. It isn't like every bait has dents. Actually its pretty random but does happen quite frequently but only with Soft plastic 0 problems with medium.
MonteSS
How much salt? ...Bill
carolinamike
Scaledriver, there's always three things to keep in mind when you're doing injection. Time, temperature and pressure. Sounds like you've only got one of these right. Most of the time, dents are formed from not enough pressure, held long enough for the bait to cool down completely in the mold, on some thicker bodied baits you just have to hold constant pressure a little longer than you normally would. If you're still having the same trouble after you try this, then it's a shrinkage issue. The softer the plastic the more shrinkage you get. So, you may need to go to a firmer formula. One of these things should take care of your issues. Whether you use salt or not you can still have this problem, if your plastic is too soft or if you let the pressure off before the center of the bait has time to cool. t-billy
Try running your plastic a little cooler and see if it helps. If your currently shooting it at say 350 try dropping down to 320-330.
Scaledriver
MonteSS when I use salt I usually run 1/4 cup bears salt to 8oz plastisol. Mike I really have tryed shooting the baits super slow and holding pressure for a 5 count (now with your and bobs explanation of the way the baits cool and draw plastic I think that might be too short a time) I have solely used Chemionics plastisol and used Soft for sticks I did use some medium and it didn't dent at all so what you said about soft shrinking more? seems accurate. If so how much if anything do you lose going with a firmer plastic? Temps I do use a temp gun and have tried temps from 280 range to 350 just can't get consistency anywhere.
