youthinthewild
Paint wont stick but to first 10 or so. Can I put painted jigs I messed up on back in lead pot? My fluid bed is 2in. Should it be 3in.? Do all football with do it mold have a crown you have to pinch off? I have these concerns about quality of jig head as follows 1.small lump where crown is pinched off football 2.Paint to thick and not sticking to some 3.Eyes on hook filled in with Pp _
Jig Man
Paint wont stick but to first 10 or so. (What are you using to heat the heads? Are you heating a lot at a time?) Can I put painted jigs I messed up on back in lead pot? (Yes) My fluid bed is 2in. Should it be 3in.? (That is a personal preference. Mine are 4".) Do all football with do it mold have a crown you have to pinch off? (Not sure what you mean by crown. If you are talking about the part that is next to the head then all jigs have it and I cut it off with gate cutters then file it down.) I have these concerns about quality of jig head as follows 1.small lump where crown is pinched off football 2.Paint to thick and not sticking to some (The paint gets too thick when the head is too hot.) 3.Eyes on hook filled in with Pp _ (Hole the jig with needle nose piers over the hook eye when you dip. Then you won't have any paint on it at all.) Hope this helps somewhat.
youthinthewild
Heat source is toaster oven yes we are doing 20 at a time.
BLT
Paint wont stick but to first 10 or so. Using the toaster oven, after opening/closing the door a few times, the temps drop to much. Get a hot air gun, give that a try. Can I put painted jigs I messed up on back in lead pot? Yes but,....they will stink to high heavens while the paint burns off. Do it outside, stay up wind lol. Scoop the paint sludge off the top as soon as you see it come to the top. My fluid bed is 2in. Should it be 3in.? Are you talking 2 inch depth or diameter? What oz. jigs are you doing? Do all football with do it mold have a crown you have to pinch off? Agree with Jig Man Also, paint not sticking could be another issue. Even if the jig is not hot enough to turn the powder to a smooth paint when you dip it, it should at least hold the paint on the jig, it will just stay in a powder looking state. If this is not happening, your jig has really cooled off, or you could have something on the jig preventing the powder from sticking. Try cleaning the bare jig with rubbing alcohol to get any oils, grease or oxidation off of it. This is why I like the heat gun over the toaster oven for heating, I feel the hotter air from the heat gun burns some of this stuff off, and it makes this a lesser issue. If you dip it and it stays in a powder form on the jig, holding it over the heat gun will "flux" it over into a liquid state. I have these concerns about quality of jig head as follows 1.small lump where crown is pinched off football If after you trim the "sprue" off and file, this could be from some of the ones that have to much paint after you hang and cure them. 2.Paint to thick and not sticking to some To thick could be to hot, or you just need to get a better "sweeping" motion into the fluid bed, and get the jig out quicker. 3.Eyes on hook filled in with Pp _ You can hold by the eye like J.M. mentioned, or use a round head tooth pick to clean the eye out right after you dip it. Get it before you cure it. Practice that sweeping motion in the fluid bed, and you will lesson this over time. Hope this helps somewhat. Ask away, plenty of good people here to help. smalljaw
Paint wont stick but to first 10 or so. Can I put painted jigs I messed up on back in lead pot? My fluid bed is 2in. I have these concerns about quality of jig head as follows 1.small lump where crown is pinched off football 2.Paint to thick and not sticking to some 3.Eyes on hook filled in with Pp _ A little terminology lesson to help you describe you problems better. On your mold, the opening where you pour the lead is called the gate, after you pour the extra lead that fills the gate and is attached to the jig head is called the sprue. So I believe whay you are calling the crown is the sprue and yes, there will be a mark or lump left, you need to use a small file and smooth it out. The powder paint problem is something that you will learn as you go, eventually something you do will work and then you will develop a system. Heating jigs in a toaster oven is ok but you must pull them out 1 at a time and make sure the temp is correct, don't go by the oven settings as toaster ovens are notoriously inaccurate as far as the heat settings go. I use a torch some use a heat gun, for me it is easier, I simply heat the jig for 3 to 5 seconds and dip in the fluid bed, and if the eyes get clogged shut I take a piece of spinnerbait wire that is .035 diameter and heat it up and stick it through the eye, very simple. The paint not sticking is the jigs are not hot enough, paint too thick is the jig is too hot. That is trial and error, keep practicing, it takes time but the more you do it the better you get. Jig Man
I also use the toaster oven most of the time but 20 jigs is too many to try to do at a time. The way I do it is pull one out dip real fast then repeat till is starts to cool then I shut the door for a couple of minutes and let them reheat. Normally I don't do over 12-15 at a time. I also have a heat gun and a torch for very small or multiple colors.
FuzzyGrub
I do use a toaster oven for heating and curring. As smalljaw said, put an oven themometer in there until you know the toaster oven settings. And as BLT said, don't leave that door open. It turns the heating element off and allows allot of cold air in. Open and close it quickly, one at a time. Also, make sure you pre-heat the oven, and leave the jigs in there long enough. The larger the jigs, the longer the time. I usually pre-heat mine at the same time I am curring a different batch.
