Modifing Jig Mold To Make Spinnerbaits

Recommended Posts

I want to make a jig mold into a spinnerbait mold. What is the best way to mark the mold so my groves for the wire will line up perfect? Is a small file the best way to make the grove and if so is there a good way to get the grove started without the file moving all over the place? Thanks for any help.

The first thing you need to do is figure out what size the spinnerbait is going to be and then decide what diameter wire you are going to use, this is going to determine the size of slot that needs to accomadate the wire. As far as the position of the wire, you need to look at the cavity and decide your wire angle and then where you want the wire to enter into the cavity, that will determine where the slot gets made, it doesn't have anything to do with the sprue hole. I'm going to ask you a question and then give you some advise baded upon the answer so don't get mad if it seems to come out in a smart way, I don't intend for that but it may seem like it. My question to you is, have you ever made a spinnerbait from scratch? Have you bent your own wire? Have you poured your own heads? If you answered no to any of these questions I suggest you buy a spinnerbait mold before you modify a mold, the reason for that is after you've poured and put together a bunch of baits you'll get an understanding of how the wire is positioned and where it comes out of the head , it is important it comes out in the right spot for the bait to be balanced properly. It will also give you a better understanding of wire sizes for the bait you want to make, so when you begin to modify the mold you'll know the exact size slot without and guessing, If you've made baits before then disregard that last few things and concentrate on what you want for wire and such. Good luck.

I've got several spinnerbait molds and a dozen or so jig molds (don't tell my wife)but no one makes a mold like I want and I don't want to pay for a custom mold if I don't have to. As far as bending my own wire....no I don't I've always bought preformed wire. I understand that you use different size wire for different size baits, my question about the spur hole has more to do with the nose of the jig is very close to the spur hole and didn't know if this might be a problem. After reading my post I realize I wasn't very clear with what I was asking when it comes to the grove and wire lining up. My question is what is the best way to mark both sides of the mold in the same place so they line up perfectly.

The way I would do it is take the wire you're going to use and figure out where it is going to go in and how far. Then take a marker and color the part of the wire that will be coming out of the cavity to the top of the mold, and then once you have it colored well make sure it is lined up and then close the mold on it, this should leave a line on the mold and give you a referance point to start cutting or drilling, however you're going to make the slot.

Well first you will have to decide on the size wire you are going to use. .035 our .040 ??? What ever you deside. Then if you take one of your preformed wires and the style hook you are going to use and lay it in the mold to look at what way its going to lay. Most likely you will see it doesn't fit because of the bladed side of the wire has no where to go. I just buy a coil of wire and cut to lenght and form blade side after I get done pouring. If your happy with the way the wire lays down to the hook and you think it will work on to the next step. Cut about a one inch piece of your wire and haveing it attached to the hook for another look to make it perfect in the way it lays in the mold. Then take a piece of clear tape and lay it on one side of the wire and slowly lay it back in the mold to make sure you have it right. Then slowly close the mold and then lightly tap with a hammer over the outside of the mold just to make a mark. I ussually use a .030 our smaller to make the first mark and then go bigger after you are sure you are right on the correct spot. I hope this helps. STEVE

I cut one side first with a vibrating multi-tool after I get everything else right then I put a short piece of wire in the groove i cut ,half of thethickness of the wire should still stick out then I take a paint marker(or a brush) and put some paint on the wire and close the mold the mark should transfer to the other side.

this sounds like an easy enough task but it does take some thinking to get everything right
