If You Like Fishing Paddletail Swimbaits...

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure how many of you tried this but if you like fishing the paddletail swimbaits using a jig head I found the perfect one!! The good old Do-it Snootie!! I've had this mold a long time and it still impresses me, a great design for flipping but I've been doing incredibly well using it to make a swimjig and man does it come through grass nice! Anyway, a friend was over and I was going through some different trailers for it and he tells me that instead of making a skirted swim jig try just using a shadalicious or a hollow belly swimbait on it...Why didn't I think of that? Well I had the 3/8oz with a 5/0 32786 so I put a small drop of softbait glue on the collar and threaded the hollow belly on it and OMG! This is what I've been looking for! I have been getting into throwing that bait a lot more than I used to and one place I've always wanted to use it was on the Susquehanna river for some big smallies but even with a weighted hook the current would still push the bait to the surface so I was thinking of a jig head but I didn't have any idea which one, I wasn't going to buy one, I was going to get a mold if anything and make them myself but I forgot about it until just now. I never considered this befor but since I'm looking at it right now I can't wait to pull it through the water and see how it works as it looks as if it was made for that purpose, what luck...Sorry for rambling but I figured I'd throw this out there for you guys who may be looking for a different way to fish these baits and don't want to buy a J-Will jig head for 4 bucks LOL! Give it a try!

Is this the mold that you are talking about.

I have never thrown a swim bait or caught a smallie, I just move to Pa and would love to do both of these. Also just bought a football jig mold and am going to try my hand at making jigs too. I guess there will be a lot of first here in Pa for me.

Smalljaw,

I love my Snootie jig. You are correct it does go throughweeds easily. Out of all my jigs if I had to throw them all away the only one I would have to have is my Snootie jig. It is so versatile. I have caught so many fish on that jig, it's just amazing. If you know how to fish a jig, you can pitch it, flip it, swim it, bounce it up and down it ia an all around great jig.

Cadman, I still remember when I got that mold, I wasn't sure about it but I wanted to try a wedge head as it was different from what I used before and man, I'm so glad I got that mold. You are right, I use it as a flipping jig in heavy cover, I use it a a chatter style bait, I use it as a swimjig and now a swimbait head. The thing I like about it when I use it as a swimjig is I can stop it dead and it has a slighty different fall and I have caught a lot of bass like that. Goober, where in PA are you? If you're close enough I can put you on smallies, and big ones at that, but you'll be hooked on them for sure! Those fish are the reason I started making my own tackle, I was modifying store bought spinnerbaits to the point that I just about making an entire bait anyway so I figured I would make what I like and now 12 molds, 87 different paint colors, and 11 pounds of skit material not to mention blades swivels and other stuff, oh my, I will tell you I didn't save money, that the easiest way to put it!!

I'm close to Allentown. I decided to do it bc I have never been snowed in (from Louisiana) and I know that I am going to get cabin fever not being able to fish all year round. So I figured that if I can't fish I might as well make baits for when I can. LOL

I'm just a little north of Allentown, and yes, you will get cabin fever here. It is also the perfect hobby if you love fishing because it lets you do something constructive but still has to do with fishing, and when you learn what you're doing, well I have times were 5 hours goes by like 30 minutes, and the best is it satisfies you once you are happy with your creation.

I love it when I can tell the wife there are others with worse habits than mine! ;) At least for now. I have to get that snootie mold!
