Air Brush Question

Recommended Posts

I.m wanting to start using an airbrush to paint some of my lead baits.I'm just learning to use the brush, and what I need to no is there a type of createx paint that is best for painting details on lead? I will be top coating the bait with D2T using a brush. There are so many types of createx paint,I just need some help, explaining which paint to use. Iv'e been using spray cans, and can do pretty well with them.

I was given a Badger paint brush for Christmas,so I thought this would be a great place to start to learn.

Any help would be greatly aappreciated.

Go to www.jannsnetcraft.com And in the box on the left hand side click on lure making. Once you do that click on paints and tool and then click on createx airbrush paints, that is where you'll find all the createx paint and they even have the flash reducer which is like a thinner as createx paints are water based. The thing with painting like this is that no matter what you're painting it will require a base coat of paint, most use white but you can use a primer but you don't have to as long as you paint a white base coat first. I hope this will hep you.

Maybe someone more familar with airbrushing lead will chime in. Try doing a search. I think there was some discussion on doing this recently. I'm not sure but I think you can just powder and cure the basecoat and then spray from there with the Createx. I would just use whatever colors work for you. Don't worry about mediums. Just get a couple of the transparent colors you like and paint over the basecoat. Get opaque white in case the powder base doesn't work.

Thanks, 152nd street baits, that is what I really needed to no,Iv'e read everything I could find ,and read where most people were using Createx, but I didn't no If just any transparent colors was what I needed or opague, or what. This is all new to me.Up to now I just sprayed a base color of off white out of a spray can,and then added my other colors the same way.But most were enamels.

Any one have anything to add,I would appreciate it.

Not a problem! You can probably use the same white out of the spray can if that was working for you. You can also use craft store water base paint also if you thin it. You really shouldn't need to this any of the createx/auto air transparent colors. The ones that you might need to thin would be the pearls and some metallics, opaque black and white

I don't cure if I"m going to use a top coat. It seems to me, and this might be the paints I'm using, It doesn't stick as good if there hardened first. I used to powder paint everything and now I'm branching off to try something new. I bought a powder paint airbrush and that was a dud for jigs. Cools the bait with the air as well and uses a ton of powder. That's what work for ME . Typically there is always something in everyone's "Personal Recipes" that gives them success . You might not even realize what it is. Practice and consistency are the two biggest parts of how I try to approach it.

ive had no problems painting over lead with createx - ive repainted several spinner bait heads as well as new jig heads to get the color/look i wanted - as far as what type to use for base coat you will want to go with an opaque (white or black usually) and then its personal preference on paint after that - opaques usually cover in one coat over a base where transparents take multiple coats if they ever completely cover - i use a combination of the two (even mixed together at times before spraying) to get the look i want on my cranks - opaque or transparent is just how well light goes through to see whats under it - think of it like this - an opaque is like a frosted glass since you really cant see though it and a transparent is like tinting the window - you can see through it but it has a slightly diffrent shade

I don't use a badger airbrush. I have a 10$ Harbor Freight brush. I am very happy with the results I get using Component Systems Vinyl paint. You can attach the brush right on the small paint jars. You need to thin it to about 50% and it sprays very nicely. For a top coat I just dip in the seal coat. It gives a nice chip resistant finish. I have not tried airbrushing the sealer but I'm sure you could. Dipping is just faster for me.
