Dave B
I am interested in adding black dots and maybe red to the gills of some of my soft plastic trout swim baits. I have used permanent markers in the past and found that the ink tends to spread over time and my little trick looking small black dots become giant dots and my fine line gill rake becomes a big red blotch on my baits. Is there a vinyl or other type paint that I can use to applying the small details to plastic swimbaits to give them the "real" trout look I seek? Any ideas, tips and or help in a brand of paint and type would be much appreciated. Thanks! Dave

Dave B
Thanks so much for the lead. I spoke to Dave at Lurecraft and he said to wipe the soft plastic with a paint thinner called "Naptha". Naptha will remove the oil and allow a paint to adhere to the plastic. Next use any latex paint. Latex is flexible and works best on plastic. The oils of the plastic will come back after painting and there will be no damage to the plastic with the use of Naptha. The latex can be spayed on, you can use a pattern if you like or applied with a brush. Dave
woodsac
Hey Dave, just in case you don't know, 'naptha' is nothing more then lighter fluid. At least that's the cheapest one that I know of.
Dave B
Jake: Thanks. Home Depot carries Naptha...so I'll pick some up along with some paint while there. Dave

SRPLASTICS
Latex paint does not work, it will rub off, although I have worked long and hard to figure this out, I apologize, but this I must keep secret for now, if you are going to paint, go full throttle with detail. Fish_N_Fool
A friend told me about some thing that he found that works, I haven't tried it yet myself but when I do I'll tell you if it works.

BigZ
I think it is pretty stupid and self effacing to post on this thread if you aren't going to answer the question posed. If you are going to keep something a secret, then why bother posting? I looked at this thread to see what kind of paint to use, not to see someone advertise their product (and hoard their trade secrets), bargain bin bait with cheap hooks or otherwise. Polysil paint from LC works just fine BTW.
