Favorite Weedguard

Recommended Posts

I like a small weedguard on my finesse jigs which are 1/4oz and lower. For the finesse jigs I'm going to use in or around wood and weeds I like a small fiber guard like an F-12, for finess jigs around rock I like a single wire weedguard. Now for regular casting or flipping jigs I like the F-30, but instead of thinning it out I simply trim a little of the length and then spread out the fibers.

maybe there isn't. I got mine from Barlows and I thought they were just mediocre.

What was it you didn't like about them? You can get them that the stiffness is different and the thickness of the strands different also. For me, I just get the normal F-30 weedguard and trim it that it is just a hait below the hook point and then I spread the fibers out, by spreading the fibers out it gives a greater area of snag protection plus it is easier to get a good hook set as the weedguard will be less dense at the point of the hook.

I thought they were just a little tuff to work with. I'm thinking about it now and maybe it's just the hole plugging issue even though I'm drilling the holes. I'm going to buy some plugs from Ted and see how that works. I do the same thing with my weedguards always have. I try to tell that to people that tie a jig on and cast it out, some listen and some just keep getting hung up. I also tend to trim my skirts too. Thanks again for all the replies this site rules!

As far as I know there is only one supplier of weedguards and that is Kayser Lure in Ursa, IL. You have to buy them by the 1000 count from him. He won't sell it any other way plus there is F.E tax, shipping and IL tax if you live in IL. As far as quality I have found over the years, that it was all pretty much the same. They come in several grades regular(.018) diameter strand, medium (.021) diameter strand and stiff (.024) diameter strand. They also come in 1/8" diameter bundles to 5/32" diameter bundles in blk, brn, grn, and clear. The smaller the strand diameter, the thinner the strand. So on a FG-30 regular weedguard, you wouild get 30-31 strands of .018 diameter per strand. You can get custom colors, but you have to order I believe 5,000+ of each color.

I got some weedgaurds once from skirts plus or something and they had a fused base. I still have a few. The website has changed its name now but I can't remember what it is. They sell Boss jigs now or something. These were the best weedgaurds I have ever used. Super high quality, no strings, no weedgaurds falling apart. I try to find a link but it's been a LONG time lol!!
