ukey28
I do a lot of .041 and up wire bending. The .051 wire has killed three pairs of craftsman round nose pliers. Anybody found a plier that can hold up to the bigger stuff? Thanks. F

mkvnmtr
My dentist came by the house and saw me bending wire. He gave me a pair like he uses. Short stubby nose with one side square and one side round. Works great on everything up to 1/16 welding wire.I use them a lot on the welding wire and see no sign or wear after three years. He said there are others you can get but these will do everything and it seem he was correct. I think they only cost about $8 at a dentist supply but I have seen them other places. They are rather small for all that they do.

mkvnmtr
To keep from being branded a liar I suppose I should explain to atijigs that I am in Mexico where the prices in the dental industry are not foolishly high. Indeed I have bought the same pliers in the united states in the same price range. I will stand by my statement that these are the best wire bending pliers I have used. With a square side you can make 90 degree bends and with the round side what ever loops you like. I thought at first the extremely short nose would be a handicap but it seems to allow me to put more force than my long nose pliers.
ukey28
Easy does it guys, I was thinking the same thing about the $8 and was going to PM mkvnmtr. How much are loomis rods down there???!!! Thanks for the input. I have large hands and I have problems with the little pliers. So the illustration really helps. Thanks again folks. F I respect everyones opinions and input as we all have different experiences and means but I would like to mention something when it comes to round nose pliers. I have had 3 pair, the first ones I got were a pair I picked up for less than 10 dollars, all I use them for is forming swivel loops on spinnerbaits with the biggest diameter wire I use is .041, in addition to the swivel loops I also form the hook loop, so it isn't like I'm forming the entire wire form, for that I use the little blue bender. That being said, the first pair I got lasted me roughly 120 or so spinnerbaits before the groove in the jaws became to deep that the pliers were unuseable. The second pair was the same thing, a dollar or two more but the same thing happened around the same number of baits, finally I spent 17 dollars on a pair of knipex and I still have them and it has been over 7 years since I got them and believe me, they I looked at so many brands and type of round nose pliers that I was confused but I thought 17 bucks is it, if they fail I'll just make the loops with my bender, it taks a few extra seconds but it wasn't going to kill me. The best money I spent in the long run, the reason I'm telling you this is you may very well find a good pair for around 8 dollars, but you'll have to be very lucky as most in that range use a lower grade tool steel and what will happen over time is the jaws will develope grooves to the point that when you try to use a different area of the jaws the wire will just slip into the groove no matter how tight you squeeze it because the jaws are tapered. Do yourself a favor and rather than take a chance, spend a little bit more and get a pair of proven pliers, the extra money will be worth the piece of mind knowing you'll have years of depenable service. mkvnmtr
I hope I have added a picture of the pliers correctly. About 10 years ago they were for sale all over the flea markets in the US in the five dollar range. I would assume they still are. Maybe now they can be found on the internet. Once I started using them I do not use the others.

I did not mean to dispute your claim, I just didn't want people to misunderstand the pricing of dental pliers. They are not a bargain here. I also have the pliers you are talking about. They do work well for bending light wire. Unfortunately here in the states they are way more than 8 dollars. You can get cheaper versions at some of knock off stores. I have tried them but they don't hold up well. I would have to agree with most everybody. If you are going to do a lot of wires spend the extra $ on a good one. Same with cutters. The cheep cutters work great for about 30 baits then the jaw tips fracture.
dlaery
I have some that cost about $20, the brand is Damascus. We use them to put on split rings. I have had the cheaper ones and we wear them out in no time. the Damascus pliers we have had 4 or 5 yeas and still look good.
