FuzzyGrub
Was discussing lead pouring at work, and a co-worker mentioned a Myth Busters episode where they stick fingers into lead. I didn't believe it, but found the video on utube: Even after watching it is hard to believe. Maybe its because I have so much respect for it, and how dangerous it can be. Also, noticed another video on utube with someone else doing it. For those of you that have worked with it, would you have believed without seeing the video? smalljaw
When I was in high school (No, there wasn't dinosaurs running around but close) my metal shop teacher dipped his finger in molten solder and then told us if anyone trys to replicate it we we instantly fail even if we would somehow manage not to burn ourselves. I never understood why that worked, thanks FuzzyGrub.
smalljaw
Now that I know how my old shop teacher did it a thought just came to me, did any of you ever happen to have just an tiny little speck of water ever just touch their melted lead? You see, I was pouring one day and did the usual heating of the mold and stuff but it was summer and after a while I was sweating a bit and just 1 little bead fell from my forehead and hit my work bench that then caused a little part of that bead to end up in my mold just as I began to pour and you know what happened next? Well to be blunt it blew up, yep as soon as the molten lead hit that little part of a bead of sweat it erupted, good thing for safety glasses, it was so nasty I don't want any thing that is remotely moist near me when I pour and these guys stick their fingers in water and then into lead and it didn't blow up, go figure.
FuzzyGrub
Maybe there is a good reason I only pour in the winter! While I haven't had any such incident, thought the same thing about the water in the lead. PS: I remember doing sand castings in shop, but didn't see the "hand dip". You did bring back memories of those old black & white shop safety videos. Missing digits.
mark poulson
I think I'll take this one on faith.
cadman
I think I'll take a pass on this experiment. I know water and lead don't mix so I can't believe this and not willing to prove anything to anyone.
BLT
I'm going to have to pass on that one also. Wonder how many people would do this at home now. Some times I just have to stop and ask WHY! lol.
cadman
You know now that I think of this, why would they even show something so stupid on Myth Busters. I can see it now somebody is going to try it to prove a point burn their hand and blame the show and the lawsuits will start. I can maybe see them proving to people something that is not dangerous, but their clip on this goes beyond stupidity. Maybe they should also put all the responses from here at the end of their video clip of what really happens.

You know, some flunky got to stick their hands in there 20 times before the "stars" did it. PS: I did hear that one of their stunts went haywire. Something about a cannonball skipping off water and destroying someones property: house, car, etc.
mark poulson
I can't believe the network lawyers let this be broadcast. And I really can't believe these guys actually tried it themselves. They must have gone to the Cliff Claven school for the terminally weak minded..... The Buffalo Theory "Well, you see, Norm, it's like this...A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But, naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers." Those guys must have done a lot of brain herd thinning! Oldfart9999
I saw it, I believe it, I now know it is possible, so I don't have to do it. Nuff said. Rodney

bassguy
I wear gloves when I pour jig heads and my hands aren't anywhere near the pot. I like all my digits intact.
