Mold Making Questions

Recommended Posts

Guys, I am toying with molding an actual fish. Real newbie questions here.

Can I make a cast of this fish in a POP mold or is that not going to work? Will the fish bond to the POP?

Planning on using clay as a base, inserting fish, and pouring the POP on top to make a two piece. Can I pour POP on top of clay? What is the type of clay I need to be looking for? Heading to an art supply store in a bit.

Saw the Bondo filler + Fiberglass resin for molding fish. Is this a better route?

Thanks for any info, shooting me down, or just a better idea.

After reading so many helpful posts on here regarding molds and what to use to make them I have to go with RTV silicone by far the best to use at the end of the day a bit more expensive yes.... But by the time you try pop and bondo and everything else out there u could probably bought some RTV. Just my opinion

Well I went for it last night. I'm pretty pumped up, against all odds I think it came out pretty well. With a little more practice I think I may actually be able to get it pretty close out of the plaster. I know RTV would be better, but I am just learning the mold making/plastic pouring crafts and boy is there a lot of stuff to spend money on. Not sure how well it will pour but planning on trying it out soon and will report back with the results.

I think I may be addicted already.
