Spinnerbait Mold

Recommended Posts

That is one you'll need to get made custom but maybe I can still help. When I started making spinnerbaits I did it with a lot of experimentation. I first was buying heads and fishing them and when I found something I liked I looked for a mold that was close and I found the Do-it Ultra Minnow spinnerbait mold. At first I really thought I was going to use this platform to hone the skill and then get a custom mold made but after fishing it for a long time in all sorts of different waters and conditions I have found my bait. It has nothing to do about looks for me, yes, I want my baits to look good and catch fish but it has to catch fish effectively, not just luck or by accident. For me that Ultra Minnow is one of the best designed heads I ever fished and trust me, I've fished a lot of spinnerbaits before making them myself. It comes through grass with ease, it runs really true and more importantly can be made as a short arm bait because it fall in that perfect head down position that I like because blades spin better if the bait falls head down. I hope you find someone to make that head for you but don't over look the Ultra Minnow if you like the minnow head design.

Does anyone sell a mold with both a collar and a spur, so I can add a skirt and a trailer?

Mark, I use a flat file and open up the hook slot out the back of the head and place a wire (.031) in the head and have it stick out about half a inch. After building bend the end of the wire for a keeper. This way you can use on any spinnerbait mold. Use this on Jigs also! Note: I bend the end of the wire about 1/8th of an inch that lay's inside the head so it won't pull out. Hope this helps.

Thanks Mac.

I guess I'll stick to store bought blades for the time being.

I tie my skirts with wire, and retie every spinnerbait I buy with wire, and cut off the rubber band afterward.

I just leave the tag long, and bend it down to insert into the trailer. That, and a drop of crazy glue, and I'm good to go.

I do the same with jigs.

If my eyes were better, I might try bending the wire end over to make a small "hook" to really hold, but I'm not that ambitious.
